Associate/Assistant Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Macau
The University of Macau (UM) is a comprehensive, internationally research-oriented public university in the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located on the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA region is rapidly developing into one of the world’s leading technology and innovation hubs. The Department of English in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) is a well-established and distinguished multinational scholarly community. The department offers a bachelor’s degree in English Language Studies (with a simultaneous emphasis on Literary Studies and Linguistics), as well as elective courses in Translation Studies. At the graduate level, the department hosts two master’s programs in (1) English Language Studies and (2) Translation, and doctoral degrees in either (a) Literary Studies or (b) Linguistics. FAH is home to both the Center for Linguistics (https://linguistics.fah.um.edu.mo/) and the Center for Translation, Interpretation and Knowledge Studies (https://cstic.um.edu.mo). The Department of English actively offers courses in the field of computational linguistics for the MSc in Data Science, a program offered by the Collaborative Innovation Institute (https://ici.um.edu.mo/).
The Department of English Language announces the opening of applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor in the specialty Linguistics.
The Department of English seeks applicants who are formally trained in linguistics to complement existing strengths in theoretical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and applied linguistics. While we are open to all disciplines, preference will be given to candidates with experience employing artificial intelligence or computational methodologies in their research. Given the linguistic context in Macau, attention to Asian varieties of English is also useful. The successful candidate will develop and teach linguistics courses in the BA and MA programs in English Language Studies and develop a program of research and publication that will include supervision of students in the PhD program in Linguistics (English).
Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a PhD in linguistics or related fields, teaching experience at higher education level (particularly for an Associate Professor position), and a research record suitable for the rank of Associate/Assistant Professor. Applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in teaching, promising potential for publishing, and a desire to provide service to the university and the English Department.
The selected candidate is expected to assume the duties August 2026.
The reward
An annual taxable wage starting at MOP 855,400 (approximately US$105,600) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualifications and relevant professional experience. The current maximum local income tax rate is 12% but actually ranges between 5% and 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
