Assistant Professor of Art Direction, Tufts University

The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Assistant Professorship with a specialization in Artistic Direction with an expected start date of late August 2026. Given the department’s commitment to student and faculty success, we are confident that our new faculty member will find an intellectual and creative home at Tufts as well as an enthusiastic and engaged classroom environment.

This is an academic year, benefits from a two-year position and is renewable subject to performance. Assistant professors at Tufts are unionized), with the potential for long-term tenure with promotional advancement within the teaching professor rank.

Responsibilities This faculty position includes: teaching the equivalent of six courses per year, divided between course design, teaching (in technical theater and other areas of the candidate’s expertise), and artistic direction of the department’s main theater productions; Create and work within picturesque production budgets; Supervising the Assistant Art Director and student scene shop staff; maintenance of theater facilities; University guidance and counselling; And serving departments and universities.

Qualifications

Master of Fine Arts in Technical Theater or significant professional experience (minimum four years) as an Artistic Director or Assistant Artistic Director. A strong commitment to university teaching is required. Other qualifications include: comprehensive knowledge of scenic materials and construction techniques, including welding and forging; Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks; Experience in the safe and effective supervision of scene shop employees; Experience in scheduling, creating and tracking production budgets; Excellent communication skills. Collaborative approach. Preference is given to candidates with a proven track record of mentoring in a university or professional setting.
