Description of the situation
The National University of Singapore invites exceptional candidates to apply for the position of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Visual Arts and Cultures. Researchers from all research disciplines relevant to the field are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to candidates who can expand our existing portfolio of teaching and research experience (see our faculty profiles here).
We are looking for scholars with strong publication records in leading journals and university presses who are also accomplished teachers who are able to teach across multiple levels—from introductory non-major courses to graduate seminars—and who can develop interdisciplinary connections in the arts and humanities.
For the role of Arts and Visual Cultures, we particularly welcome applicants whose experience extends across more than one of the following areas: history and theory of modern or contemporary art, architecture, design, or visual/material culture; visual studies (including visual anthropology); Literary and cultural studies; Cultural theory and criticism. exhibition studies; And organizational studies. Applicants whose research involves practice-based or creative methodologies are also encouraged to apply, particularly where these methodologies intersect with scientific research in those fields.
Although we do not require a regional specialization, candidates with research or professional experience in Southeast Asian art, visual culture, or exhibitions will be favorably considered.
Salaries are internationally competitive, with benefits including supported housing. The teaching load is 2:1 (one or two courses per semester, for a total of three courses per academic year).
Program information
The Junior Art History Program at NUS is one of the highest-ranked programs in the field internationally and is housed in the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). The minor and its sister minor Visual Cultures (Department of Communications and New Media) are aligned with the minor in Visual Arts and Cultures (Department of English, Linguistics, and Theater Studies) forming a unique interdisciplinary track. The programs work in close partnership with the National Gallery of Singapore, the National University of Singapore Museum and other leading exhibiting institutions, exposing students to both discursive agendas and practical realities in the sector.
