Bridges Academy is dedicated to understanding and educating gifted and highly talented students with learning differences (exceptional or 2e students) and promoting a successful academic and social experience for our students and the broader community. We do this through two departments: Bridges Academy (Los Angeles) and the twice-excellent Career Research and Development Center (2e Centre).

Bridges Academy (LA), a college preparatory school for grades 4-12, empowers its students to succeed academically and socially through small classes and differentiated instruction, creating an environment where talents are recognized and developed and learning differences and disabilities are accepted. Many students come to Bridges defined by their challenges but graduate defined by their strengths and talents.

Bridges Academy LA is looking for a part-time, long-term substitute (late January to late March) to teach United States History at the high school level. Bridges is seeking a candidate from charter, public, or independent schools with experience teaching 10th and 11th grade students.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching two 10th-11th grade history sections using a strengths-based lens
  • Advising a group of 8 students
  • Supervising students during breaks and lunchtime
  • Accompanying field trips and other trips
  • Participate in department, section, grade level, and all school meetings

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop warm and trusting relationships with students and adults
  • Providing a positive environment in which students are encouraged to actively participate in the learning process
  • Demonstrate integrity, initiative, self-awareness, and a growth mindset for both students and themselves
  • You have a passion for education, especially for gifted and neurodiverse students that is also grounded in inclusion, equity, and belonging
  • Demonstrate flexibility, sound judgment, strong social skills, and the ability to read, evaluate, imagine, evaluate, calculate and make wise decisions
  • Be able to implement differentiated educational programs
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills in person, in writing, by phone and via Zoom
  • Show enthusiasm, creativity and compassion
  • Work comfortably in a team environment
  • Collaborate with other teachers and administrators in evaluating project-based learning approaches
  • Communicate with families regarding student progress, potential, and behavior through phone calls, emails, and parent/teacher conferences
  • Consult with families, teachers, counselors, and administrators to develop in-depth knowledge of student profiles

Finally, ideal candidates will have the following knowledge base:

  • Current knowledge of subject area content and understanding of how diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice interact with subject area content
  • Understanding and developing gifted and neurodiverse high school students
  • Understanding social emotional development, supporting executive function, and wanting to learn more
  • Knowledge of educational methodologies to support discipline-specific and interdisciplinary learning for gifted and neurodiverse students
  • Knowledge and ability to implement meaningful and authentic diagnostic and progress assessment measures
  • Knowledge and effective use of educational methods and teaching materials, especially in differentiation
  • Problem knowledge and project-based learning
  • Know how to develop curriculum appropriate for a wide range of learners
  • Knowledge of Google Classroom and desire to learn new technology

Education and experience required:
