Associate Lecturer in Criminal Law at Birkbeck, University of London

Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer in Criminal Law to join Birkbeck Law School and support the team in the upcoming academic year in 2026.

We are looking for an Associate Teacher to teach the seven foundational law subjects, with a particular focus on the following unit:

  • Criminal law
  • Teaching Wednesdays, 1800-1930, online via MS Teams
  • Teaching on Thursdays, 1800-1930, in person at Birkbeck
  • The unit is taught during the spring and summer semesters. Teaching for the spring semester begins on January 12, 2026, and for the summer semester on April 27, 2026.

You will have specialist legal knowledge relevant to teaching the above law module(s). You will be qualified with an LLM (or relevant postgraduate degree) with either an LLB (or similar qualification covering the seven foundations of legal knowledge) or equivalent professional experience.

As a co-teacher, you will have:

  • Advanced experience in teaching and supporting students with academic and research skills.
  • A proven track record of students being engaged and wanting to contribute to an impactful and transformative learning experience.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently as required, and has the ability to support teaching.

The reward

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on the length of continuous service with the College (rate from £59.91 per hour including London pro rata allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

This hour rate is based on the starting point of Year 6 and includes the ‘Teaching Multiplier Related Assignments’ of 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other course-related examination duties.
