Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (measurement) Within the College of Science at NC State is one of the largest interdisciplinary geoscience departments in the country. measurement Provides: (1) high-quality, world-class science instruction to the university community through information technology courses in marine, earth, and atmospheric sciences; (2) educational opportunities for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in the geosciences through world-class research, and (3) outreach activities that promote improved public awareness and understanding of science. Research programs cover a diverse spectrum including meteorology, climatology, geology, oceanography and marine biology. measurement It includes approximately 40 faculty members, 70 graduate students, and more than 200 undergraduate students involved in basic and applied studies of Earth systems with degree programs in marine sciences, geology, and meteorology. measurement Dedicated to excellence in research and teaching and promoting an environment that allows all members of the department to flourish. Major concentrations include weather forecasting, air quality, air interactions, climate modeling, hydrology, geochemistry, oceanography, active tectonics, pelagic processes and quaternary studies, geogeography, sedimentology, regional geology, and geospatial component analyzes on geology. Programs include many tracks in each of our program areas and thus provide the opportunity for a broader education than traditional departmental bachelor’s degrees.

Multidisciplinary nature measurement It lends itself to the study of problems such as forecasting severe weather (e.g. hurricanes), geological hazards, coastal erosion, weather interactions in the sea zone, surface and groundwater pollution, big data assimilation, and global climate change. While basic research is always important, many research projects also have direct application to current issues such as water quality/water supply, seafood harvesting, climate change, weather forecasting, natural hazards, land resources and land use. Opportunities exist for disciplinary and interdisciplinary interactions with a wide range of scholars at NC State. measurement It is one of six NC State Departments with a presence at the NC State Center for Marine Science and Technology (cmast), a coastal and marine sciences research facility located on Bogue Sound in Morehead City, NC (http://www.cmast.ncsu.edu), and measurement Faculty are involved in the Center for Geospatial Analytics (http://geospatial.ncsu.edu).
