OpenAI CEO speaks
This comes as a part of Sam Altman’s commitment to support the IndiaAI Mission and thereby serve its customers better.
“Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in the statement.
Altman had mentioned earlier that he was “excited to visit India in September” and disclosed that the company was “especially focused on bringing its product to the country”.
Altman’s company in trouble?
Meanwhile, OpenAI is facing legal issues in India, with news outlets and book publishers accusing the company of using their content without permission to help train ChatGPT.
However, Altman’s company has denied any wrongdoing.
Alongside legal challenges, OpenAI is facing tough competition from rivals such as Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity, which are offering premium features at no cost to users in India.
Active users of ChatGPT in India have increased on a weekly basis by over four times in the past year.
India ranks among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform.
The country has the largest population of students using ChatGPT worldwide.
