Purchasing services are located in the University Finance and Procurement Directorate and works as a dedicated central function to ensure that the university achieves value for money in all its purchasing activities.

About the section

The team works as a center of excellence, and provides guidance and support to colleagues throughout the Foundation on how to buy goods, services and business effectively and responsibly. Our role is not only to manage costs but also to ensure the consensus of purchasing decisions with the broader strategic goals of the university.

As of August 2024, the university is no longer a rating as a public authority under the 2015 general contracts regulations, however, it continues to support the standards of high practices for the practice of purchases, while recognizing its responsibilities as a charitable institution exempt and benefiting from public funds. This means that although it is no longer legally linked to general purchase rules, it is still committed to transparency, fairness and moral sources.

The strategic man succumbs to purchases for the five strategic topics of the university and encourages colleagues to consider sustainability, social value and moral considerations in their purchase decisions. The strategy also enhances cooperation with suppliers and internal stakeholders to reduce risks and improve supply chain flexibility.

The purchases in Manchester Met are more than just buying – it relates to informed and responsible choices that support the institution’s mission and values.

About the team

There are 13 people on the purchasing team; Procurement manager is the strategic pioneer of management, and the head of purchases runs the operational aspects of the administration. The Director of Procurement reports to the head of purchases and managers a team of four managers to the categories. The team includes the director of systems, running a team of four officials. There is also a purchasing data analyst within the team.

About the role

As a category manager, you will be responsible for the Department of Resources and Procurement Operations related to the facility purchase category. This includes the management of the giving process, the understanding and analysis of the category spending patterns and the development of the category strategy.

The facilities category consists of spending, contracts and suppliers related to goods and services purchased on behalf of our facilities team, which sits under real estate, facilities and capital development. This includes major products and services, such as cleaning our campus buildings and facilities, ports and provisions of food and drinks on campus, buildings maintenance, employee wallets and many others.

Main skills and experiences

It is expected to experience value achievement for money and improve service. You will have some experience in the participation of stakeholders and you have skills in influencing others to achieve a goal. It will be desirable if you have prior knowledge of the supplier market and purchasing operations. It is expected that analytical thinking and prepare experience in reporting.

The Carted Institute for purchase and display (CIPS) will be a feature.

Main responsibilities

As a class director, you will play a major role in ensuring the university’s value for money for money on purchases and contracts, taking into account the cost, quality and sustainability, while ensuring that best practices are followed.
