Established in July 1980 by Governor James P. Hunt, the NC Japan Center works to strengthen academic, economic, scientific, and cultural relations with Japan. It serves as a statewide resource, promoting business and trade with Japan, promoting academic cooperation and student exchanges, and serving the general public by offering language and culture classes, hosting a variety of cultural events, and working with community groups related to Japan. The center is located in the historic Spring Hill House as part of NC State’s Centennial Campus, and operates under the direction of the university’s Office of Global Engagement.

Key Responsibilities:
- Japanese language program management:
- Scheduling and organizing non-credit Japanese language classes for each fall, spring, and summer semester.
- Recruit, employ, supervise and retain qualified teachers, ensuring high and engaging quality of teaching and performance.
- Develop and finalize class schedules in a timely manner for each semester in collaboration with teachers.
- Manage all aspects of student registration, including the online store registration system, and coordinate with the online store team to open and close registrations according to published schedules.
- Promote Japanese language classes through various channels to achieve target enrollment numbers, as determined through consensus between the Director of Extension Education and Community Outreach and the Center Director.
- Coordination of cultural events:
- Plan, coordinate and implement at least two major cultural events per year (e.g., Otsukimi-kai, Hina Matsuri).
- Organize additional ad hoc cultural events, workshops or lectures, as time and opportunity allow between class registration periods.
- Collaborate with community partners, volunteers, and stakeholders to enhance event offerings and engagement.
- Administrative support:
- Assists the Director in the day-to-day operations of the NC Japan Center, including tasks such as sending mail, ordering supplies, and coordinating maintenance requests.
- Manage the processing of donation deposits, corporate membership fees, and other funds received by the Center.
- Maintain accurate records of all financial activities and submit reports to the manager when requested.
- Community participation:
- Develop and maintain relationships with local organizations, educational institutions, and community members to enhance cooperation and support for the Center’s programs.
- Represent NC Japan Center at community events, meetings, and other outreach activities to promote its mission and programs as needed.
- Adapt to changing conditions and perform additional tasks as needed to support the Center’s mission and goals.
- Manage and serve as resource contact for the Japan Center’s library of books, videos, and other media.
- Assistance with workshops and cultural events.
