Job title: your Union Organizer/CommunicationsYou will be at the forefront of building and mobilizing a strong union presence within our workforce. Your role will include engaging with staff, building solidarity and recruiting members.
Key Responsibilities:
Awareness and recruitment: Identify and interact with employees interested in joining our union. Conduct outreach efforts inside and outside the workplace to build support and recruit new members.
communication: Drafting and designing posts, newsletters, social media content, blogs, online campaigns and any other relevant communications.
Education and training: Providing information and education to employees about their rights, the benefits of union membership, and the process of joining a union. Conduct training sessions, workshops and individual meetings to empower potential workers and members and build solidarity.
Campaign planning: Develop and implement strategic organizing campaigns to address workplace issues, achieve union goals, and increase union membership. Collaborate with employees, union leadership, and community allies to develop effective campaign strategies.
Packing: Mobilize employees to take collective action, such as signing union authorization cards, participating in marches and protests, and engaging in other forms of activism. Promoting a sense of solidarity and unity among workers to enhance the bargaining power of the union.
Alliance building: Build coalitions with community organizations, labor groups, and other stakeholders to support union efforts and advance common goals. Leverage external support to amplify workers’ voices and pressure employers to support the union’s goals.
Negotiation support: Provide support and assistance during labor negotiations, including gathering input from members, drafting proposals, and mobilizing support for union demands. Advocating for fair and equitable contracts that meet the needs of workers.
Documentation and cultivation: Maintain lists of workers and members. Identify and help develop worker leaders.
Member participation: Promote active participation and engagement among union members through regular communications, meetings and member-led initiatives. Attending work site visits.
Other matters: Performing any other task assigned by the business manager.
Qualifications Preferences:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Previous experience in community organizing, labor organizing, or related activity.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and persuasion skills.
- A passion for social justice, workers’ rights, and grassroots organizing.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with labor laws, union organizing tactics, and campaign strategies.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizing efforts.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to speak in public.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other related software applications.
- Willingness to work irregular hours and travel as needed.
- Bilingual preferred.
