Duties of the position

The Community Schools Specialist provides best-in-class support to the Executive Director, Community Schools and Local Education Agency (LEA) staff in effectively implementing the Community Schools strategy in all regions.

In close collaboration with the Executive Director, the Community Schools Specialist will lead the implementation of evidence-based policies and practices that accelerate student learning and measurable academic outcomes, with a particular focus on historically disadvantaged students. This position will also lead efforts to enhance and evaluate the academic performance of community schools, ensuring that instructional and comprehensive support directly contributes to improved achievement for all learners.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provides guidance and technical assistance to coordinators, principals and other stakeholders to enhance the implementation of community schools.
  • Leads the development, implementation and monitoring of community school strategies, tools and processes.
  • Design and coordinate professional learning, training and capacity building initiatives.
  • Facilitates communities of practice and creates presentations, resources, and materials to support best practices that promote comprehensive services and academic success.
  • Coordinates with local, state, and national partners to share information, build resources, and expand the capacity of community schools.
  • Develop and update digital resources and tools in collaboration with MSDE’s Office of Communications and Community Engagement.
  • Coordinates meetings, travel arrangements, and logistics for in-person engagement.
  • Plans and supports training sessions, conferences, and other events in community schools.
  • Contributes to the development and review of program guidelines, regulations, and informational publications.

Minimum qualifications

education: Master’s degree or at least 36 hours of post-baccalaureate equivalent coursework from an accredited college or university.

expertise: Three years of administrative or teaching experience in a community school program, coordinating with families, and collaborating with community partners and/or other organizations.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute a bachelor’s degree and two additional years of experience directly related to the job option for the desired education.

2. The above requirements are established by the Maryland Department of Education in accordance with Education Material, Section 2-104, Maryland State Code Annotated.

Required or preferred qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information in your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Experience developing and managing effective working relationships across various offices/departments, comprehensive service providers and/or community stakeholders to successfully implement programs and initiatives.
  • Experience designing and developing process and materials to support community schools.
  • Experience administering a poverty grant focus or other state or federally funded grant programs.
  • Experience designing, delivering and evaluating professional learning and other short- and long-term collaborative projects.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish is highly valued. Proficiency in Spanish will greatly enhance our ability to serve, engage, and build meaningful relationships with diverse communities and stakeholders.
