Recreation Program Assistant – SEAPARC Aquatics

summary
This position assists in planning, implementing, promoting and evaluating aquatic educational and public programs. The Recreation Program Assistant works closely with staff in providing efficient and effective aquatic programs and services.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Assists in planning, organizing and coordinating aquatic programs and special events.
  • Assists in mentoring, training, and providing routine guidance and direction to aquatic staff.
  • Helps ensure facility policies, procedures and regulations are implemented.
  • Assists in providing and maintaining volunteer programs.
  • Maintains inventory of swim trophies and purchasing supplies as required.
  • Ensures that all test papers and program evaluations are completed and that appropriate awards are available to participants.
  • Maintains program equipment and supplies and ensures good repair, working order and adequate inventories.
  • Assists in marketing and promoting entertainment programs.
  • – Fully familiar with all facility emergency procedures and reacts to emergencies according to procedures.
  • Performs duties of lifeguard instructor, team leader, and advanced aquatic instructor as required.
  • Follows all CRD policies, procedures and standards
  • Assists with shift coverage and schedule preparation.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Additional information

Basic skills and abilities

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate activities and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance to ancillary program staff
  • Ability to develop harmonious relationships with the general public and fellow employees.
  • Proficiency in word processing (MS Word), spreadsheets (MS Excel), Outlook and recording software (CLASS).
  • Knowledge and understanding of WorkSafeBC practices/protocols, workers’ compensation law, occupational health and safety regulations, and other relevant safety laws.
  • Knowledge of the life saving community.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary courses in a related major
  • At least six months of directly related experience
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Certificates

  • Acceptable criminal record check. The applicant/incumbent is required to submit to a criminal record check to work in this position and to notify his or her supervisor if any criminal charges are brought against him or her that may be related to his or her employment.
  • National Lifeguard Certificate
  • Water Emergency Care or equivalent First Aid certification with CPR-C
  • Life Saving Society trainer
  • One or more advanced water certifications
  • A valid British Columbia driver’s license
  • Swimming coach at the Life Saving Society
