Tayside Reserves Warden (Second Chance) – RSPB

We are looking for an enthusiastic and enthusiastic person to join our team for an exciting 6 month opportunity. The Warden will contribute to all aspects of the work at our Tayside reserves – Loch Leven, Loch of Kinnordy and Tay Reedbeds.

The reserves offer unique habitats and excellent views of wildlife, including pink-footed geese, beavers and bearded tits, and as such, each comes with its own challenges and rewards. Lake Leven is a visitor attraction near Kinross which has a visitor center and a busy trail network. Loch Kinordie, near Kirriemuir, is an unassuming visitor site with excellent up-close views of the wildlife, while the Tay Redbeds, between Perth and Dundee, is a quiet haven for cane growers.

The role will involve working closely with the Real Estate Operations Manager and Estate Agent to deliver land management and monitoring on the three sites. The work will include supporting our volunteer teams to assist our efforts, leading monitoring, as well as contributing to visitor experience operations.

Your normal working days will be Monday to Friday with occasional weekend work.

The property is based at Loch Leven and will require a driving license to access the other reserves.

What do we need from you:

Basic knowledge:

  • Land conservation management in particular.
  • Relevant environmental knowledge.
  • Agricultural or animal knowledge where applicable.
  • Apply health and safety to site management (eg risk assessments).
  • Relevant knowledge of compliance requirements (e.g. agricultural and environmental legislation with particular reference to livestock grazing where relevant).

Basic skills:

  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Individual and group management skills.
  • Real estate management.
  • Record keeping/data management.
  • Organizational including time management and prioritization.

Solve the problem

Core experience:

  • Proven track record of reserves or land management.
  • Biological monitoring.
  • Working with sponsors.
  • Working with contractors.
  • Work with staff or volunteers

Desired qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Machinery operations, equipment service.
  • Working with visitors.
  • Information Technology and Database (Merlin).

Additional information:

  • This role will involve solo work and working in remote locations.
  • This role will require occasional working at weekends, early mornings and evenings, so will need someone who is able to be flexible.

This is a full time fixed term role for 6 months at 37.5 hours per week and may be suitable as a secondment opportunity.

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further announcement dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
