Marketing and Communications Manager

Based in Metairie, LA
(It is preferable to live in the south, a far away place and travel occasionally, that’s okay)

This position leads the external and internal member communications program for the Mid-South Regional Council of Carpenters and its associated training funds, covering 11 states and over 5,000 apprentices. The incumbent will identify current members to develop leadership and enhance organizational, policy, and advocacy efforts as they relate to the Council, their training, and their finances. Responsibilities include creating and implementing communications business plans, developing and implementing member communications plans, and managing social media platforms.

The role also includes authoring occasional editorials, editing position papers, and managing ongoing print and digital communications. The incumbent will collaborate with union leadership and staff, additional communications staff, as well as outside counsel to enhance communications strategies and integrate communications into the larger operations of the Regional Council.

Duties:

  • Creates campaign-style messaging to advance CSCRC priorities.
  • Write social media and video content, conceptualize and produce member-focused videos.
  • Write blog posts, emails, editorials, and social media posts that keep members engaged and informed.
  • Writes messaging guidelines and prepares content for digital, political and organizational campaigns.
  • Produces a variety of daily and long-form written content for various digital and print platforms.
  • Writes scripts for paid marketing videos to promote union priorities and campaigns.
  • Works with the video module to write scripts and produce organizational and campaign videos.
  • Crafting emails to internal and external audiences.
  • Distills social listening content for effective messaging to drive union priorities.
  • Assists in writing and editing regular Regional Council reports and conference publications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

requirements:

Education and experience

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major or intensive coursework in journalism or a substantive liberal arts field and at least five (5) years of relevant publications, public affairs or communications work experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the following knowledge and skills:

Skills requirements

  • Knowledge of communications and media operations and production of advocacy journalism.
  • Good ability to shape messages, produce campaign-style communications, write polished social media copy, news-style articles and blogs, emails, video scripts, and reports.
  • Ability to extract data, especially for use in complex research projects. Ability to layout and translate complex information into clear prose for a variety of platforms.
  • Fluency in major social media platforms – Instagram, Facebook, X/Bluesky, TikTok, and LinkedIn
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the labor movement and related politics and special interests, especially as it relates to workers in the South.
  • Ability to work under and meet tight deadlines, juggle multiple tasks, pay close attention to detail, and maintain accuracy.
  • Advanced editing and proofreading skills are required.
  • Ability to manage social media interns, colleagues and small team project management.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish, both written and spoken, is advantageous.

Travel and work hours

  • Travel and extended work hours, including weekends, may be required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
