summary
Join the Illinois Nurses Association, an independent, democratic union for health care workers, and join a team working to bring equity to health care workplaces across the state. INA is hiring Organizers To build power for healthcare workers and transform healthcare in Illinois. The organizer works under the supervision of a supervisor, and is responsible for all aspects of managing internal and external union organizing efforts. Candidates must be committed to the labor movement, and have a proven track record of working with and motivating workers in the context of trade unions. Organizers must be self-motivated, organized, and willing to work hard to achieve justice.

Duties and responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • In collaboration with staff specialists and supervisors, implements the INA’s internal organization model in various bargaining units in order to build and maintain organization, participation, education, and authority within the local bargaining unit.
  • Must be able to evaluate and evaluate potential organizational objectives; Initiate direct contact with unorganized workers, identify and develop leadership, conduct home visits, map workplaces, implement our organizing campaign strategy, and work closely with INA leadership to conduct organizing campaigns and representative elections.
  • You must be able to have a structured conversation that moves workers to take action.
  • Educate members about what it means to be a union member, their legal rights, and how to achieve change by organizing together. Assists in the development and implementation of educational activities such as the INA Membership Association and any other programs to be developed.
  • Maintains current knowledge of health care, labor, and legal trends related to employment relations.
  • Prepare flyers and other written materials as directed for distribution for both internal and external organizing campaigns.
  • Visit workers at their work sites, homes, and other interactions with workers.
  • Work closely with INA leadership to plan and implement strategic campaign plans.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. – At least 3 years of experience in organization in a work context. Strike and contract campaign experience is a plus.
  2. A bachelor’s degree is preferred, but not necessary.
  3. Ability to lead and motivate employees.
  4. Previous experience using databases and other computer hardware and software, including the Microsoft Office Suite, in performing work-related tasks.
  5. The analytical skills necessary to accurately understand, interpret and deal with fairly complex information and data.
  6. Interpersonal communication skills necessary to communicate clearly, orally and in writing, with a wide range of individuals and audiences, especially when describing or explaining collective bargaining and labor relations information.
  7. Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals from different backgrounds and cultures, demonstrate a consistently supportive and helpful approach when working with others, and consistently demonstrate flexibility to lead or follow as different situations require.
  8. Ability to understand and apply established standards and policies and use common sense to resolve problems quickly and effectively.
  9. Ability to operate standard office equipment such as telephone, copy machine, fax machine, mail machine, computer, and computer printer.
  10. Ability to focus attention on detailed tasks and activities, manage and coordinate a variety of tasks, and effectively prioritize work to maximize efficiency and productivity.
  11. Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop and reach while performing daily duties. Ability to lift and/or carry up to twenty pounds.
  12. Self-motivated and willing to work long and irregular hours.
  13. Fluency in Spanish is an added advantage.
  14. Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle within one month of start date.

Work environment

  1. Normal office environment.
  2. Routine travel by car and train.

Competitive wages and benefits. This is a paid position that is exempt and covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The salary scale starts at approximately $58,000 with competitive benefits but the employee union is currently in contract negotiations and that amount will likely increase soon.
