About the role:

The Department of Life Sciences, which operates across Imperial’s South Kensington and Selwood Park campuses, is one of the largest life sciences groups in Europe. Our work addresses all the major issues facing the world today, from combating malaria and infections, to antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and the environment of our planet.

We are now seeking to appoint an outstanding individual as Head of Technical Operations, to lead and manage our technical team, and ensure the efficient operation of our core facilities, research and teaching laboratories.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Technical Director to take on a leadership role with us. You will be based at the South Kensington Campus, travel regularly to Selwood Park, and work closely with colleagues across the university and beyond.

what would you do:

• Develop and implement a technical support and development strategy, and coordinate activities across our universities.
• Support teaching and research across a range of activities, including molecular biology laboratories, microbiology, tissue culture facilities, plant growth facilities, high-performance computing, level 2 and 3 biohazard containment suites, CBS facilities, imaging and high-energy lasers.
• Maximize the efficient use and management of our infrastructure and essential facilities.
• Financial planning including purchasing and maintaining equipment.
• Support the department in incorporating sustainability best practices into our activities.
• Lead planning, coordination and supervision of laboratory renovation.

What we are looking for:

• Have received a degree level education in a relevant subject, and/or relevant professional qualifications related to the work of this position
• Occupational safety qualifications such as the NEBOSH National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
• Extensive experience in technical management, facility management, and working in a research laboratory.
• Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures.
• Sound understanding of financial control and reporting with excellent attention to detail.
• Proven leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and manage employees.
• Effective interpersonal skills at all levels.
• Demonstrated ability to understand, conceptualize and interpret technical support requirements for academics, research staff and students.
• A solutions-oriented approach, with an open mind to new ideas and the ability to think creatively and innovatively in order to solve problems.

This is a full-time position based at the South Kensington Campus in London. There will be regular travel to Silwood Park Campus as part of this role.
