Fully Funded ESRC Wales Postgraduate Scholarship in Social Sciences (WGSSS) in Economics Track at Swansea University

In light of today’s global challenges, high-quality research in economics is more important than ever. The Pathway combines the distinguished expertise and record of research excellence at three institutions – Cardiff, Bangor and Swansea. While producing outstanding research in all areas of economics, Swansea’s Department of Economics has a particularly strong research record in macroeconomics, applied microeconomics, energy economics and regional economics, and serves as a key partner in the Wales Institute for Social and Economic Research and Data (WISERD). Furthermore, the department is home to the Center for Research in Macroeconomics and Macrofinance (CReMMF) and the Center for Applied Microeconomics (CAM), which bring together leading academics in these fields from across the UK and beyond.

The track provides a rich research environment for its students at all sites, including: presentations at doctoral seminars; Attendance/presentations at regular faculty research workshops; Frequent external speaker seminars; Access to research events. Wales-wide research seminars held at the University of Wales Conference Center in Mid Wales; Major international conferences. For example, in addition to a weekly external research seminar in economics at Swansea, the CReMMF hosts a webinar series in macroeconomics as a forum for discussions with external academics affiliated with the Centre.

On the broader track beyond Swansea, Bangor sponsors the International Doctoral Symposium in Accounting and Finance (jointly with the Universities of Leeds, Bradford, Strathclyde, Queensland, Salamanca, and Bologna), and Cardiff hosts the annual Welsh Postgraduate Research Conference in Business and Economics, offering research students and early-career researchers the opportunity to present their work to Leading international academics in a supportive and demanding environment.

We will encourage and facilitate cross-institutional supervision where appropriate. Cohort building is supported by an annual student-led doctoral conference. This includes the full range of DTP Economics students as well as students funded by other internal and external means.
