AMD⁠(opens in a new window) (NASDAQ: AMD) and OpenAI today announced a 6 GW agreement to power OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure across multiple generations of AMD Instinct GPUs. The first 1GW deployment of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.

This is a long collection of notes on economics and AI, inspired by two excellent workshops I attended in mid-September: “Economic Scenarios for Transformative AI” organized by the Windfall Trust and the “National Bureau of Economic Research Workshop on the Economics of Transformative AI.” I just left the Economic Research team at OpenAI, after releasing our paper, “How People Use ChatGPT”.

Investing activity is showing the first signs of real life since 2021: “exploratory meetings” are on the rise, AI companies are getting an 85% valuation premium, and seed companies are pushing into Series A rounds. Although deal numbers remain at their lowest levels in a decade, these shifts represent a final thaw in a market long frozen by high interest rates, a constrained dry powder, and a lack of cash.
