Full time: 35 hours per week

Fixed duration: 30y June 2026

Applications are invited for Associate Researcher positions in Algorithms and Complexity, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) to start a New Approaches to Counting and Sampling (NACS) grant, led by Dr Heng Guo in the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh.

Opportunity:

The NACS project aims to explore new frontiers in computational counting and sampling, including the development of new algorithms and analysis techniques. Typical tools and topics are Markov chains Monte Carlo, local Lovasz, high-dimensional dilatators, polynomial geometry, etc. The successful applicant will be generously supported by the project and have the opportunity to collaborate with project partners.

Your skills and qualities for success:

necessary:

  • PhD (or about to complete) in computer science, mathematics, or related fields
  • Evidence of the ability to conduct high-quality research and produce publications in high-profile settings
  • Confidence in understanding and processing complex mathematical ideas. Strong knowledge of stochastic algorithms and discrete probability

desirable:

  • Experience in research in the field of computational counting and sampling
  • Outstanding publishing record
  • Excellence in written and oral communication skills, planning and time management
