Teaching Fellow in Creative Writing (Poetry) at the University of Edinburgh

part time: 17.5 hours per week

Fixed term: 2-year contract (available from January 2026)

Opportunity:

Applications are invited for the position of Early Career Teaching Fellow in Creative Writing (Poetry).

The successful candidate will primarily contribute to the teaching of MA courses in Creative Writing and Literature (poetry workshops and seminars), and supervise postgraduate theses. They will also contribute to elective undergraduate creative writing (poetry) courses and may supervise undergraduate theses as required. They will contribute to relevant management teaching in the subject area.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates with research experience in one or more of the following areas identified as existing or emerging strengths in the subject area of ​​English and Scottish Literature: Digital Humanities; economic humanities; environmental humanities; health humanities; LGBTQ+ studies; Postcolonial, transnational and/or diasporic literary studies.

We welcome applications for this position from all qualified candidates and particularly welcome applications from members of ethnic minorities, who are currently under-represented in the Faculty of Arts, Languages ​​and Cultures.

Your skills and qualities for success:

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field, awarded at the time of application.
  • MA in Creative Writing
  • Demonstrated experience or ability to teach creative writing (poetry) in the context of the English Literary Studies Department.
  • Experience in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching, including designing instructional materials for classrooms.
  • Experience in grading and evaluating student performance at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience in supervising undergraduate and/or postgraduate theses.
  • Experience of using IT effectively for teaching and learning, as appropriate to the role.
