College of Engineering (Center of Excellence: https://eng.ua.edu/) at the University of Alabama (UA: https://ua.edu/) Calls for applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering, is a member of the Executive Leadership Team for the Center of Excellence and also serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Engineering along with other Associate Deans of the College, Department Chairs of all departments within the College, and heads of other major College units. The Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs serves as the Dean of the College of Engineering, and the position is nominally for a period of 5 years with the possibility of renewal after review.

Candidates with distinguished accomplishments, significant influence in their fields, and exceptional national and international reputation will be eligible to be considered for significant support from the Endowment through appointment as a Shelby Distinguished Endowed Professor (https://provost.ua.edu/the-shelby-endowment-for-distinguished-faculty/). The position of Shelby Distinguished Professor is one of the highest honors given to faculty members at the University of Alabama, and candidates who feel that their record and accomplishments merit consideration for this additional honor should indicate so in their cover letter.

Minimum qualifications

  • He earned a Ph.D. in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.
  • Experience as a tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Engineering, Computer Science, or related department with 5+ years of graduate teaching and mentoring experience.
  • Experience in a Faculty of Engineering or similar academic unit in a research intensive institution (R1).
  • A proven track record as an active and distinguished researcher who has developed and supported an externally funded research program and used this research program as an environment for teaching and training graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to foster collaboration across diverse groups.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Commitment to transparency, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to build consensus among faculty, staff, and administration.

Preferred qualifications

  • Credentials and record commensurate with your appointment as a tenure-track professor in one of the seven departments in the UA College of Engineering.
  • Administrative experience such as undergraduate administrative experience in the Faculty of Engineering at an R1 university at the department, research center or senior level.
  • Experience developing and managing graduate programs at the departmental level or higher.
  • Familiarity with national and international trends in higher education in engineering and computer science, including online learning and degree programs.
