Hourly rate:
$39.97


Minimum 40 hours per week.


Reporting to the Director of the Vernon Water Reclamation Center (VWRC), this position is responsible for ensuring the quality of laboratory work related to wastewater treatment, reclaimed water, and sanitation functions for the City of Vernon.

Duties include:

  • Coordinates and performs laboratory analysis, testing, record keeping, and all other functions in the laboratory.
  • Obtain samples from various sources throughout the water reclamation plant and reclaimed water irrigation system. Evaluate, calculate and correlate laboratory results; Provides advice and assists VWRC staff in identifying causes and treatments when tests indicate errors in treatment systems.
  • Develop and implement sampling techniques and procedures related to wastewater treatment and reclaimed water irrigation.
  • Records and maintains process control procedures, data management, and recording systems.
  • Maintains accurate records as required.
  • Compiles and completes relevant reports such as the VWRC annual report.
  • Runs process computers and automated analyzers.
  • Replenishes and protects inventory and supplies used in the laboratory.
  • Performs routine maintenance, care, and cleaning of laboratory equipment and process control equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • All persons employed by the City of Vernon will be required to assist the City in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from normal duties.

Education and experience required:

  • Completion of a two-year Water Quality Technology Diploma program or recognized equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in a related position.
  • A valid British Columbia driver’s license
  • WHMIS training
  • Level one first aid
  • A combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • All laboratory equipment necessary to complete all analyses, computer and related software, and general office equipment.
  • Necessary knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of chemical, biological and physical testing and analysis including sample preparation and use and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge necessary to analyze water and wastewater quality samples and prepare reports as they relate to standard methods.
  • Necessary knowledge of computers regarding data entry, database development and management, and generating regular reports.
  • Understand the water and wastewater treatment process.
  • Experience using laboratory and testing equipment and ability to identify equipment failure and/or repair requirements.
  • The necessary ability to coordinate laboratory process procedures.
  • The necessary ability to interpret and apply laboratory results.
  • Knowledge of computer operation and programming related to the operation of an automated analyzer.
  • Basic mechanical proficiency required.

Preferred education and experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized university in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Marine Biology, Freshwater Sciences or recognized equivalent.
  • 5 years of relevant experience in an accredited chemical, bacteriological, or environmental laboratory.

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Certified by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia.
