SEIU Local 521 was founded in 2007 when 5 local unions in the Bay Area, Central Coast and Central Valley came together to form a larger, stronger union. Together, our members are building a true 21st century union that fights to empower our members and improve their lives. We represent more than 50,000 public service workers in cities, counties, courts, schools, private nonprofits, special districts, and public health care.

Organization manager You will supervise union staff at SEIU Local 521. You will organize new bargaining units at SEIU Local 521. Our organizing plan focuses on the public sector, privatized public services, and public health care. The ideal candidate will understand industry analysis, have experience managing a large team at scale, and experience applying strategic influence, research, policy, and organization at the ground level to create the conditions for victory. The Director will work within the local regional staff leadership team and work as a team to oversee the implementation of the Union’s vision and program.

Responsibilities: All duties listed are required but not limited to, and may or may not be performed on an ongoing or continuous basis at any given time.

  • Providing the vision and strategic plan for the comprehensive organization and multiple campaigns department.
  • Lead and provide support to staff teams and members in implementing the overall campaign plan as well as individual action plans.
  • Assist in the training and development of staff and member organisers.
  • Lead employees by example, setting high standards in work ethics and professional approach to work.
  • Develop short- and long-term campaign plans, and implement multi-component plans.
  • Create and articulate a positive vision for campaigns and for the union as a whole.
  • Build individual relationships with workers and educate them about the union.
  • Holding individual and group meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizational campaigns.
  • Work with staff to identify, recruit and develop leaders to direct and lead their campaign.
  • Motivating individual workers and groups of workers to take the necessary actions.
  • Work to find real and positive ways to engage community allies in current organizing campaigns.
  • Involving workers in broader union efforts to change industry standards as a whole.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Advance management of the experience of union employees
  • Commitment to social justice
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to plan and execute work effectively and manage time, both as part of a team and individually.
  • Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness to travel frequently and/or for an extended period of time within local jurisdiction, based on work assignments.
  • An enthusiastic self-starter who is also a strong team player
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong personal planning and time management skills
  • Ability to work with people from other cultures and backgrounds.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Additional requirements: Must possess a valid California driver’s license; Must pass a DMV inspection and have a good driving record; Must have auto insurance that covers commercial driving ($100,000 per person/$300,000 per bodily injury accident/$100,000 property coverage); Must own a car for commercial use.

Compensation and benefits: Salary commensurate with experience $136,472.00 – $150,837.95.
