SEIU Local 521 was founded in 2007 when 5 local unions in the Bay Area, Central Coast and Central Valley came together to form a larger, stronger union. Together, our members are building a true 21st century union that fights to empower our members and improve their lives. We represent more than 50,000 public service workers in cities, counties, courts, schools, private nonprofits, special districts, and public health care.

External regulator New bargaining units will organize in SEIU Local 521. The organizing focuses on the public sector, privatized public services, and public health care.

Responsibilities: All duties listed are required but not limited to, but may or may not be performed continuously or continuously at any given time.

• Organizing non-union workers to create change and organize in SEIU Local 521.
• Assess and build relationships while motivating and motivating workers through individual and group meetings. Attracting, developing and mobilizing workers’ organizing committees.
• Identify, hire and develop leaders. Training and supervising organizing members.
• Plan and implement actions, events, marches, etc. on and off work sites.
• Building toward union elections, negotiating election agreements, and filing charges through the NLRB and PERB.
• Develop and implement organizational campaign plans. Understand and contribute to community and political outreach, campaign communications, targeting, development leadership, and research.
• Work to support other key local union priorities, as needed

Minimum qualifications:

• Willingness to travel frequently and/or for an extended period of time within local jurisdiction, based on work assignments.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours, often including nights and weekends.
• A strong commitment to social and economic justice and a commitment to organizing the unorganized through the labor movement
• At least one year of experience as a full-time outside organizer or equivalent experience organizing community or rank-and-file members.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills. Good listening skills are essential.
• Ability to create and implement detailed organizational plans.
• Ability to relate to and organize workers across diverse racial, socioeconomic, and occupational groups.
• Good judgment and ability to discern priorities when faced with several important tasks.
• Ability to think strategically and respond to rapidly changing situations.
• Basic computer literacy and willingness to use technology when needed.
• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously as part of a team.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.

Additional requirements: Must possess a valid California driver’s license; Must pass a DMV inspection and have a good driving record; Must have auto insurance that covers commercial driving ($100,000 per person/$300,000 per bodily injury accident/$100,000 property coverage); Must own a car for commercial use.
