Center Director/Lecturer in Counseling and Psychotherapy at the University of Edinburgh

Master’s and PhD programs in Counseling and Psychotherapy educate students to become qualified counselors and psychotherapists, both in the UK and around the world. Based on the dialogue between psychodynamic and person-centered approaches, the programs provide professionally accredited education in non-directive, relationship-based therapeutic practice.

The Hope Park Counseling Center is a general adult counseling service at the University which also acts as a placement provider for Masters and PhD trainees in Counseling and Psychotherapy and as a research resource for staff and students. The Center is jointly operated alongside the Center for Psychological Therapies, a treatment center for youth and families, which serves as an employment provider and research resource for trainees in applied psychology.

As Director of the Hope Park Counseling Centre, you will provide clinical leadership, training, consultation and mentoring of counselors and psychotherapists in training, leadership and support to the centre’s team of clinical colleagues. You will also provide clinical governance, consultation and guidance to the team of experienced clinical supervisors who oversee the practice of trainee consultants at the centre.

As Center Director, you will be involved in supporting the development of clinical research within the Centre, including facilitating students and academic colleagues in service-based research activity, with the opportunity to develop your own research program and the potential to collaborate on research grant bids.

In collaboration with the Director of the Psychotherapy Center and the Project and Development Director, you will contribute to the strategic development of both centers and their services and research programmes. The goal is to achieve integration between the basic services and research strategies of both centers as a single operating unit.

In your teaching duties, you will contribute to course organisation, curriculum development and supervise teaching and research in counseling and psychotherapy programmes. Counseling and psychotherapy programs draw on social science, practice-based research and scholarship, including case study, empirical research models and creative relational research methods. You will be supported to develop collaborative research initiatives and independent research outputs in your areas of interest.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A postgraduate qualification in counseling and psychotherapy, at Masters or PhD level, with professional accreditation from a professional body in the relevant field of counseling and psychotherapy (COSCA, BACP, UKCP or equivalent) or eligibility to apply for accreditation
  • Experience supporting counseling practice placements and directing counseling services
  • Experience in professional education in the field of counseling and psychotherapy
  • Experience in organizing courses and contributing to program development
  • You will be able to take responsibility for organizing your own activities and managing allocated resources
  • You will have the ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team as well as the ability to take responsibility for organizing your own activities and managing allocated resources.
