About the situation

The City of Redwood City, California, invites candidates to apply for the position of Long Range Planner in the Planning Division of the Department of Community Development. This position, which will focus primarily on long-range planning activities, is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic professional to lead or participate in several ongoing long-range efforts including:

• Downtown Area Plan, an update to the city’s vision for Redwood City and surrounding neighborhoods
• City update Historic preservation decree
• Develop objective design criteria
• Implement the city’s housing component and related policy initiatives
• Research, track and implement new state laws
• Develop policies and standards to address climate resilience in coordination with engineering and public works departments
• Regular maintenance and updates of the city’s zoning code and general plan

In addition to long-range planning activities, this position will be assigned a limited number of current planning projects depending on the needs of the planning department.

The position allows for a hybrid work schedule (3 days in the office and 2 days remote).
The annual salary range is $147,000-$176,000.

• Both physical planning and policy development;
• Project management of one or more long-term policy/planning projects;
• Design and implement a community engagement process for one or more long-range planning/policy projects;
• Work with and manage consultants and development teams;
• Post-engagement processing of complex development projects;
• Excellent analytical skills and strength in synthesizing and summarizing complex information;
• Ability to translate regional and state policy into local regulations;
• Excellent organizational and time management skills and experience managing and meeting multiple project timelines and deadlines;
• Excellent writing and presentation skills and experience communicating complex planning concepts to diverse audiences;
