Description of the situation

The Department of Statistics in the College of Computing, Data Science and Society (CDSS) was originally founded in 1938 as the nation’s first center for statistical research. Since its inception, Berkeley alumni and faculty have shaped the foundations of statistics. The department continues to be recognized as one of the preeminent centers for probability and statistics in the world.

This position reports to the Department Head. In consultation with the Department Director and working closely with the Master’s Program Advisor, the Director develops and directs the professional Master of Arts program, engaging with students, faculty, and external stakeholders.

The Director will be responsible for ensuring that the Master’s program fulfills its academic mission and prepares graduates and places them in competitive positions in industry. The Director provides strategic leadership and direction to the program, ensuring alignment with academic and industry standards and delivering a high-quality student experience. The Director will lead day-to-day operations and manage long-range planning. The Director, along with the Master’s Advisor, will foster a strong sense of community by interacting with students to enhance their academic and professional success. The incumbent will reach out to potential collaborators; Implement program activities and develop policy recommendations to review and improve the program. Under the direction of the Department Director, the Director will manage existing program resources.

Responsibilities include:

  • Hold office hours to provide career counseling, career advice and guidance
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty and industry, to align program objectives with broader goals
  • Lead recruitment efforts with the assistance of the Master’s Staff Advisor.
  • Develop programs to enhance professional development (e.g., weekly master’s student seminar)
  • Cooperating with the head of the college’s master’s committee to ensure that the curriculum is updated
  • Lead summer preparation activities, including running workshops
  • Assist in recruiting and assigning trainers for preparatory courses and programs
  • Document and communicate program results, including required reports to UCOP and Regents
  • Coordination with relevant master’s programs at CDSS including the fifth-year master’s programs and the Discovery Programme
  • Assist with admissions, working closely with master’s program advisors, faculty and staff
  • Recruitment travel within the United States
  • Provide advice to the Department Director on program marketing strategies.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (Required when placing an order)
Master’s degree or equivalent international degree or enrolled in a master’s degree award program or equivalent international degree.

Additional qualifications (required when starting)
Master’s degree in statistics, data science, and/or related field

Preferred qualifications

  • Ph.D. in statistics and/or a related field
  • A technical lead with a high degree of knowledge and experience in statistics and data science
  • Industry experience strongly preferred
  • – Familiar with the industry and other career opportunities in statistics
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong management skills including detail orientation and organizational skills
  • Flexible and adaptable in managing time and juggling multiple responsibilities
  • Two or more years of university or college teaching experience, ideally in intensive data science and/or statistics programs within a short period of time.
  • One or more years of managing educational programs, outreach, and curriculum development.
  • Familiarity with UC Berkeley and the Department of Statistics, as well as university-specific tools and processes.
