Executive Director, Atlanta Contemporary, Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta Contemporary engages the public by creating, exhibiting, and developing contemporary art in vibrant Atlanta, Georgia. Each year, Atlanta Contemporary serves more than 12,000 visitors, features more than 200 artists across exhibitions and project spaces, and organizes more than 125 programs.

We are looking for an Executive Director (ED) who will make his mark on the organization by leading all aspects of Atlanta Contemporary (AC), including revenue development, organizational management, operations and annual operating budget, all guided by the organization’s 2026-2028 Strategic Plan.

With your passion for AC’s mission, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Be a visionary leader with a focus on strategy and execution

  • Promoting the field of contemporary art and the evolving role of museums

  • Collaborate with a highly engaged staff and an active Board of Directors (BOD)

  • Promote AC’s core values ​​through arts programming, including studio artist and independent curatorial programs

  • Guiding the organization and the Board of Directors by making decisions and achieving goals that will guide the organization into the future

A day in the life of ED

Fundraising

  • As the primary fundraiser for Atlanta Contemporary, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing all revenue streams

  • Develop ongoing relationships with institutions, government funders, and donors. Identify and manage new relationships locally, nationally, and internationally to serve the goals identified in the strategic plan

  • Lead direction for grant applications and lead organizational fundraising activities. Work with development staff to conceptualize and implement fundraising campaigns and membership program expansion

  • Obtaining sponsorship and financing of 50% of the exhibition costs

Leadership + Management

  • Executing the mission of Atlanta Contemporary, managing the organization and overseeing all aspects of daily operations

  • Develop, manage and support a strong board of directors; Encouraging and enabling Board of Directors participation in strategic and fundraising initiatives

  • Develop the annual operating budget in consultation with senior staff and the Board of Directors, make financial decisions consistent with the budget approved by the Board of Directors, and keep the Board informed of the financial status of the organization

  • Supervise and support contemporary employees and contract workers in Atlanta to foster a collegial and supportive work environment

  • Ensure facilities are assessed, managed and kept operational (with support from the Facilities Manager)

  • Support a community-focused environment that promotes inclusivity and respect

  • Facilitate technical guidance through collaboration with the Regulatory Advisory Board

What it takes

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred

  • Minimum 4-6 years of prior experience in a museum, arts organization, or other non-profit organization

  • – At least 4-6 years of experience in a leadership role with employees, contractors, and budget management responsibilities of $500,000 or more

  • Efficiency in fundraising and development

  • Flexibility to accommodate temporary shifts in schedules, including weekend and evening work

While it is understandable that no one person will bring all the desired skills, characteristics and features Experience and background in the following specific areas would be beneficial:

  • Artistic Knowledge: Preferred experience in contemporary art and design practice including exhibitions, events and curatorial practice

  • Real Estate and Facilities Management: Ability to manage artist studio rentals and maintenance of the entire campus and historic buildings
