Data analyst (Zambia Evidence Laboratory) at London College of Economics and Political Science

The London College of Economics is committed to building a diverse, truly and comprehensive university

The salary is competitive depending on experience and subject to the conditions of the local market

The International Development Center (IGC) works with policy makers in developing countries to enhance comprehensive and sustainable growth through pioneering research. IGC combines a group of program teams across Africa, South Asia and the Middle East with a network of world leading researchers with the support of a global center at the London College of Economics in partnership with Oxford University. The partner countries of the International State Committee currently include Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Jordan, Mozambique, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zambia. The majority of the International Governmental Committee is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in the United Kingdom (FCDO).

Since November 2024, IGC has supported the establishment of the Evidence Laboratory in Zambia (Zel) within the Ministry of Finance and National Planning. Zel’s mission is to convert how public institutions use data across sectors such as health, taxes, education and mining, which improves data quality, enables the systematic operation of the system and building analytical ability. This involves cleaning, unifying and documenting data groups for use between departments, with the use of methods that ensure that the outputs are strict and related to politics, from descriptive analyzes and standard economic evaluation to interactive information panels and artificial intelligence tools (such as natural language processing, predictive modeling, and automation). All outputs are produced in conjunction with civil service employees to ensure that visions are practical and driven by policy request. Zel is also a pioneer in the integration of traditional administrative and survey data with unconventional sources – such as spatial geographical images and communications records – to enable making more comprehensive policies based on data.

Its headquarters is located in Lusaka and provides its reports to the Zel president, and the analyst (analysts) will support data development lines of data pipelines, realistic application of artificial intelligence tools and machine learning.

Main responsibilities:

  • Collecting data, cleaning and merged it from multiple sources, ensuring consistency and quality during cooperation with an IGC engineer (engineers) to develop automatic data pipelines and maintain comprehensive introductory data.
  • Supporting and interpreting data analysis, developing information panels using tools such as Tableau or Power BI, contributing to research methodologies, and exploring new technologies such as artificial intelligence tools and machine learning to enhance data processing.
  • Ensuring compliance with legal and ethical data standards while facilitating data exchange efforts between Zel and ZamStats and other public institutions.

Main qualifications and required experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master in Computer Science, Data Science, Economy, Financial Engineering, Statistics, or Related Cummies.
  • Experience installed in data analysis, data management and/or developing databases.
  • Master Python and at least one tool to visualize data like Tableau or Power BI.
