Fellow Research in Physical Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Northomia

About the role

Applications are supported by Four years Post -PhD research in physical ocean, funded by the UK Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC). A successful candidate will be part of multiple contracts (DOC riversEAnic CHang in ATearDSEN SEA) He will be based in the Faculty of Geography and Natural Sciences, within the Faculty of Science and Environment at the University of Northomia, Newcastle, the United Kingdom.

The project focuses on developing our understanding of the role played by the oceans in leading the ice cover change in the Amuundsen segment in Antarctica, the source of the vast majority of the current contribution of the Antarctic Science to sea level rise. The ice decline in that area is led by the ocean, specifically the relatively deep, deep water (CDW) that pushes a rapid melting of floating ice shelves that make up marine terminology of rapid flowing ice rivers. CDW is obtained from the deep southern ocean, flowing on the continental shelf in Antarctic and under ice shelves via a network of sea floor ponds. One of the main objectives of the contract project is to determine the CDW flow to the continental shelf by deployment throughout the year of a set of fixed bears and an independent stable car on the edge of the shelf. The successful candidate will be responsible for processing, analyzing and publishing the resulting data. There will also be an opportunity to join a cruise on RRS Sir David Attenborough to participate in publishing and recovering tools.

About the team

This research project is delivered within the Faculty of Geography and Natural Sciences, the home of a vibrant society that includes more than 90 academic and research employees working on a wide range of topics in physical and human geography, including one of the largest groups in the United Kingdom that focuses on ice dishes. In assessing the last research excellence framework, the school ranked second in the country to obtain research authority, with 90 % of its leading or excellent research outputs were ranked internationally.

Contracts is a cooperative project that leads from Northoma, which includes researchers in five universities and two research centers and includes a mixture of technological development, peripheral notes, remote sensing, historical data analyzes and numerical modeling. Several activities have already started, which paves the pioneering field work component that includes the first advanced underwater advanced car deployment operations that have the ability to notes throughout the year under the sea ice, alternating between operating periods and negative anchor on the sea floor to maintain the power of the battery.

About you

Applicants must obtain a PhD (or have equivalent research experience) on a numerical subject (preferably discipline in physical sciences). The knowledge of experts specialized in physical ocean will be an advantage.
