We call on expressions of interest in pursuing research for a fully funded doctorate in the School of Studies through faculty members, the International Sustainable Development Department at Warwick University.

background

Sub -Saharan Africa is witnessing a faster temperature increase than the global average. Children are particularly vulnerable to severe heat, but there is limited experimental research on how this affects their mental health and their cognitive functions. This research aims to develop effective adaptation strategies, especially in places that already suffer from frequent heat extremism.

We are looking for a doctorate student to conduct an in -depth investigation in children and caregivers who have heat experiences and perceptions in schools in Accra, Ghana. The research will analyze social, cultural, institutional and governance that constitute responses for adaptation practices arising from heat and study in unconventional knowledge environments, against the background of mental health and cognitive behavior from the broader project. The student will have the opportunity to form the project to comply with their interests and experiences.

This doctorate is part of a major international project, “common knowledge about the heat of the neighborhood and its effects on the mental health and awareness of children”, with funding from the Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR). The project examines mental health and cognitive effects of heat exposure in children at primary school ages in Accra and Ghana and benefits from the infrastructure of research, data and partnerships. It is designed on three basic goals:

  • To participate in the production of the viable knowledge of the risk associated with the heat and the adaptation strategies with political partners, civil society and citizens.
  • To estimate the effect of exposure to heat on the mental health of children.
  • To estimate the effect of exposure to heat on the cognitive results of children.

He will be a resident of Warwick University, supervised by Dr. Camilla Odia and joining an international team from McGill University, Ghana University, Michigan State University and Massachusetts University. The situation includes conference financing and travel, with the expectation of field work in Ghana.
