Deep Springs College appointed the Julian Steward President of Social Sciences to start in August 2026. This position is open to teachers in any discipline in social sciences including sociology, history, political science, anthropology, archaeology, economics, law, geography and psychology. We are particularly interested in social scientists who have very widely multidisciplinary interests and who are eager to work closely with our permanent human sciences and natural science chairs. The ability to teach both the intellectual foundations of social sciences and the methodology of social sciences is very desirable. Above all, the ideal candidate will be a committed and emotional teacher and with enthusiasm for the unique educational program of Deep Springs.

Deep Springs was established in 1917, a private university program and is fully accredited for academic talented youth, and is located on a small farm of livestock and Falva in a beautiful area of ​​white mountains on the borders of California Nevada. The program records 26-30 students dividing their time among the academics of strict, work and autonomy (“the three columns”) with the aim of developing the life of leadership and service. As members for a long time in the college community, faculty chairs have played a fundamental role in promoting the intellectual culture of the school.

The Julian Steward chair is expected to cultivate social sciences as a vibrant survey area on the campus while building a relationship with students and colleagues outside the semester – by attending joint meals, cooperation with students in projects of common importance, and participating in recreational activities such as walking for long distances and technical performances. The right person for this role will be excited to serve and live in a coherent small society located in an isolated and beautiful desert environment. Faculty members usually teach two self -designer sessions in each semester (four courses per academic year) with less than ten students. Chairs are expected to teach training courses in their field of experience, in addition to more general courses to support the expansion of social sciences in deep springs (i.e. courses on both ecclesiastical theoretical texts and research methodology). In addition, faculty members have the option to guide students through independent studies every year. Chairs are encouraged to seek students’ participation in their work, or work with students to design projects with mutual attention. The chairs are also expected to work in one of the committees that students lead in the college, which manages students’ admission and reinstalization, as well as communications, communication and development of the curriculum.

Full -time faculty chair dates with wide advantages such as free housing, facilities and meals. Additional benefits include health, vision and dental insurance in addition to a monthly retirement contribution equal to 14 % of the salary. The faculty chairs are not traditionally studied during spring and summer periods, which leads to a four-month annual release (May-August). The salary starting to the faculty chairs is 76,000 dollars, while considering the additional salary for previous years of service as the current faculty. Initial dates for three years, renewable for three years. Deep Springs College does not offer possession, but our faculty chairs often remain for 4-6 years, as they are transmitted to the positions of attainment in the best public and private institutions for higher education.
