The workshop of senior technicians (the marine station) at the University of Pleimouth
About the role
The Biological and Maritime Sciences School wants to appoint a large technician as a director of a workshop and maintenance of small boats to oversee daily operations and ensure effective operation of our engineering facilities at the marine station. You will be responsible for maintaining high engineering standards, improving boat availability, and providing an exceptional service to our students.
This is a unique opportunity to join the technical team of the university’s marine station, as it provides engineering support for employees and students in the fields of subjects, including marine sciences, marine biology, memorization, survey and ocean science. This will include the daily management of the workshop and workshop facilities, and the maintenance of boats, to enhance the distinguished students ’experience, students and research at a global level.
This position is among a team of dedicated marine technicians who support teaching, learning and research in the school and faculty members in both university majors and graduate studies. You will support students, maintenance and development of scientific facilities, as well as ensure that health and safety procedures are followed. By working closely with colleagues, you are expected to share your knowledge of others, and help them develop their ideas and achieve their academic capabilities.
You will need a commercially accredited qualification to operate and maintain a small craft of up to 20 miles of the port. The role will require the use of risk evaluation and safe work systems in safety management, coding and legal requirements for small commercial ships. This post sometimes will require some unable working hours, including weekends sometimes and a short stay away from home. To achieve this, both internal and external training will be provided to ensure efficiency and currency.
You will be proactive in your approach to improving and developing yourself and the service you provide, which indicates a personal initiative and good judgment when facing complex problems.
As the Director of Transport, you must have a current full driver’s license (manual transport), which is necessary because you will drive the University of Pleimmouth, including a small bus of 17 seats. This role is also subject to health monitoring with our occupational health team.
