The McDonald Research Institute for Archaeological Research invites requests for assistants / participant in the field of fixed research in African heritage and spatial geographical data science. This is a specific date for 24 months. The postal holder will work as part of the endangered MAEASAM AFRICA project (Maeasam) (Maeasam) (MAEASAM) (https://maeasam.org). The project is supported by Arcadia (https://www.arcadiafund.org.uk).

About the Maeasam project

The project, which began in 2020, aims to identify, document and share knowledge of endangered archaeological sites in eleven African countries using a combination of remote sensing, historical map analysis, research based on records supported by land identification, assessments within the countries of nature, their extent and the possibility of threats in these hidden sites. Maeasam is a partnership program, where Cambridge University works as a leading institution and coordination. The main collaborative partners are the University of Pretoria. Iuniversite cheek anta diop de Dakar, Senegal; British Institute in East Africa; London University University; York University; Obsala University; Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique; The Royal Museum of Central Africa; Universite des Sciences Socialles et de gestion de bamako, Mali. The Maeasam project is also cooperating with the main institutions and stakeholders in Africa, as well as with other projects funded by Arcadia, including the appointment of the archaeological heritage in South Asia (MAHSA), which was also hosted at the University of Cambridge.

Main responsibilities

The basic range of this role is to develop an effective, easy -to -use digital framework to monitor the various heritage threats to support the decisions of sustainable heritage management (especially in an African context), using advanced methods of satellite images analysis, remote sensing and machine learning as well as geological analysis. A colleague researcher will work in close cooperation with the project manager, the main investigator and all the team members.

The mail holder must obtain a doctorate (or present his thesis) at the time of appointment. Those who have provided a doctorate will be appointed but have not yet obtained a search assistant level, which will be modified to the research partner once a doctorate is awarded.

Salary ranges: Research Assistant: 34,610 pounds sterling – 35,608 pounds (grade 5) and a colleague researcher: or 37,694 pounds sterling – 46,049 pounds (grade 7)

Full -time, in the fixed term: the money is available for this post for 24 months.
