In this post:
It has been 3 years since I was on the African continent, it’s time! And yes, the last time it was in South Africa. Saying this because when I was participating that I would visit Gabon, in Africa, a few colleagues were unable to register, but I was going to South Africa. Like this it was the only country in Africa … in fact, from the point of view of IBM, works often happen in South Africa, although we also enjoy the presence in other countries such as Kenya, in fact with the Research Center, Senegal and many North African countries. In my endeavor to visit at least 100 countries, Gabon was No. 69. More specifically in Africa, I already visited it: Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Namibia, yes, several times, South Africa.
So let’s talk a little about Gabon with some facts to put it in a list of 54 African countries.
- Geography. Gabon is part of tropical Africa. In fact, the Gabon equator crosses a few miles south of the capital, Libeville. It is the thirty African country from the point of view of size, but only 44, the residents of the wise. Instead of a small country after that.
- date. She was distinguished by 75 years of French colonialism, making French the official language. Then 50 years of ruling by the Bongo family until the last military coup two years ago.
- economy. Big access to natural resources although a little flows to the population. While the gross domestic product of the individual is high, thanks to the low population, most country is really bad and translates into high plastic pollution from beaches in particular, which harms tourism. New rulers pour a lot of money in giant infrastructure and building projects, although it is unclear how much this financial sustainability is. July 15 was distinguished by the beginning of the tourist convoy, which is an initiative for two months to enhance tourism for foreign actors. Some marketing efforts, but often something very superficial and hide restrictions behind the scene.
- weather. In July, the dry season was supposed to be, but we rarely saw the sun, another result of climate change. Being on the equator, it is moist throughout the year, and the length of the daylight is fixed in 12 hours, from about 6 to 6. Gabon, like all other African countries except Egypt, does not change time throughout the year, so it is 9 or 10 hours of the time of the Pacific, for example.
- culture. Like most places in Africa, time has a different appreciation and meaning. It is especially noticeable every time you expect some services such as restaurants or airports. Between the colonial scars, the Western ties to the previous rulers, the eggs are not really welcome. You need to pay special attention to not taking pictures of any official employee or building, and in general, people do not like to enter your photos, or at least expect some money.
- Infrastructure. The last large investments mentioned. Otherwise, the roads are good along the ocean between the city center and the neighborhood of La Sabliaère, but that’s all. Although I have not visited much of the country, I was told that most roads are dirt roads otherwise. If any road is at all. We have seen directly what the rugged dirt roads can be on our way to Camp on nyonié (Where we saw the elephants in the wilderness!). With limited roads, boat alternatives include, such as those we took for an hour to cross the estuary, or aircraft (which are expensive given the small size and traffic/availability limited). In the city, many cars, motorcycles, taxis and mines for the locals.

However, the most prominent of which is the Ltd. Gabon Tourism, you are not sure that this will be the most useful in the “Running” series. However, if you visit Gabon, starting with Libreville, here is a great place to run. I will put another post on running in A nearby garden, nursery.
As I mentioned earlier, the neighborhoods of the safest neighborhood along the ocean. I can say the beach, but with the escape of the estuary, most sewage goes directly to the sea, not to mention the mountains of plastic garbage, even the locals do not really go to swimming. Disable when you see these sandy beaches accessible from the city. As if you couldn’t enjoy the beach in Barcelona!
My country started operating in La Sablère, which is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) to the north of the city center, or 6 kilometers from the upscale Radisson Blu Okoumé Hotel.
As you will see in the following replaive.Cc the bridge, I managed to run a few miles on the beach, before having to switch to an earthen road, then find a way to return to the beach, further. In my transformation, you will see a video of one of these ponds that create a creek after the high tide. I was only carrying one water bottle, in these wet conditions, it is not enough anyway for 17 miles, so I returned. I liked to explore this Santa Clara Cap. Although it may be difficult to run north, as it enters into the protected nursery that will be the subject of another post.
And some threshold pictures.
Do not be directly related to this extent, starting with the wonderful meetings in the camp in Nyonié:
Back to the beach near La Sablère:
The fishermen returned with fresh fish!
The first river to cross, after the tide rises.
Goat farm.
Another strong river before/below Santa Clara Cap, I went back.
Dad happy and proud!
The bridge on the largest river.
NE infantry fees, PHEW!
