5 ways to impress your interviewer in the first 90 seconds
You’ve finally landed an interview for your dream job, so you’ve obviously studied the company, and you can talk for days about why you’re the perfect fit. But it turned out so 33 percent of bosses will decide whether to hire you within the first 90 seconds of meeting you, according to a survey Come recommendedcontent marketing and digital PR consulting for job search and HR technologies. Would you like to get the interview? Here are our top five tips from the pros.
1. Don’t overdress.
You want to impress, so you should wear the best suit in your closet, right? In fact, if you’re wearing a suit and everyone else in that office is wearing leggings and a flannel, you’re almost certainly not going to fit in with their team, says Steven Rothberg, president and founder of College recruitment.
If you’re not sure what to wear, you can ask. Also, different people within the same organization may dress differently. Higher-level people may wear suits, while lower-level people may dress more casually, so you’ll want to dress as good or slightly better than the level you’re interviewing for so no one feels uncomfortable. 65% of interviewers say clothing choice can be a deciding factor between nearly identical candidates, the Come Recommended survey found.
2. Show up on time.
That doesn’t mean you have to arrive too early, says Brandy Britton, district president com. OfficeTeama recruitment service specializing in administrative and office support professionals. “Plan to show up five to 10 minutes early for your interview,” Britton says. “Arriving earlier may catch the hiring manager off guard and make them feel like they’re expected to drop everything to meet with you ahead of time.” Factor in time to get past the office building’s security and elevator system so you’re not late as well.
3. Be polite…to everyone.
Britton says one way employers judge potential candidates is by seeing how they interact with the first person they meet (usually the receptionist). “Not only are your actions before the interview an indication of your ethics and character, but getting the input of the receptionist or other individuals can influence the final decision,” she says.
4. Bring some equipment.
You’ll need a good-quality pen (not one with a bank or hotel logo), as well as a blank pad of paper, says Barry Drexler, president and founder of Expert interview coach. If you’re interviewing for a tech job, replace that paper notebook with the latest tech laptops or tablets.
5. Look the part.
“Be aware of what your body language is saying,” Britton says. “Bending over, constantly shifting in your chair, crossing your arms, or wearing a tense expression can indicate stress or disinterest.”
In a poll, bosses admitted that fake body language translated into a failed interview. Do you want to have a great interview? Then sit up straight (33% of interviewees have poor posture), be friendly (21% cross their arms), shake hands firmly (26% have weak handshakes), don’t fidget (33% fidget), smile (38% don’t smile), look into the interviewer’s eyes (67% fail to make eye contact), and don’t play or touch your hair (21% have this habit), according to Come.
