Tulane Universityone of the nation’s leading research institutions, invites applications for a full-time assistant professor position starting fall 2026 within to divide River Coastal Science and Engineering (RCSE). This recruitment supports the growth of RCSE as an interdisciplinary center for water nexus scholarship spanning civil and environmental engineering, hydrology, geosciences and environmental sciences. We encourage applications from scientists who will complement and expand our existing strengths and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration across the river and coastal delta ranges. The goal of our expanding faculty group is to conduct interdisciplinary research and develop innovative approaches to teaching the next generation to address complex problems associated with human interactions in the river-to-ocean world. The department’s unique location, which includes the School of Science and Engineering (SSE), provides exceptional opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and supports the development of cutting-edge research and educational initiatives at the intersection of riverine coastal science and engineering and broader STEM fields. SSE is the only academic unit of a major research university that integrates the behavioral sciences, physical sciences, life sciences, engineering and mathematics, providing an extraordinarily rich environment for innovative programs and interdisciplinary research.

The successful candidate will:

  • Establish and sustain an externally funded research program in one of two areas within the field of civil engineering: environmental engineering (with a focus on water, wastewater and/or environmental remediation) or river or coastal structural engineering.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate classes to support our newly launched undergraduate major in Civil Engineering – Water and Environment and our thriving graduate programs
  • Mentoring and mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers in water-related science and engineering
  • Participate in professional service and outreach activities within Tulane and in the global community
  • Participate alongside RCSE faculty in the development of a nationally recognized water-related civil engineering program

Qualifications

RCSE is seeking applications from candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Strong interest and demonstrated potential for convergence research in water science and engineering
  • Area of ​​interest is environmental or structural engineering (river and coastal).
  • Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in one of two areas a) Water, Wastewater and/or Environmental Remediation, or b) Structural Engineering in River or Coastal Areas, or a closely related field, by start date
  • Postdoctoral or proven postdoctoral research experience. It is preferred
  • Licensed civil engineer or intention to obtain a license within four years
  • Required start date is August 1, 2026
