ILRI Vacancy: Project Veterinarian, Project Closing Date: 30 October 2025
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is seeking to recruit a Project Veterinarian to support youth employment activities related to innovation in poultry health service delivery in Poultry Value Chain Development Activities SNV-ILRI RAYEE II.
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutrition security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for the effective, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research in the developing world. It is co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, and has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia in addition to Central, East, South and West Africa. www.ilri.org.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of poultry health interventions targeting youth and women employment in RAYEE ii project areas including joint development and dissemination of innovative health service delivery models.
- Providing innovative models of health service delivery to women and youth groups organized in RAYEE II project areas (eg, medicines, vaccines, treatment), with a focus on job creation.
- Providing advisory services and veterinary support to young female poultry producers in RAYEE II project areas on herd health monitoring, disease diagnosis, sample collection, vaccination and treatment.
- Establish collaboration with RAYEE II project partners and local stakeholders to jointly implement innovations related to poultry health.
- Lead poultry health capacity development activities, including preparation of training materials and other documentation, as required.
- Facilitate poultry health collaboration with government veterinary services, research institutes, universities, private sector partners and farmer organizations.
- Develop and implement customized training modules, guidance packages and practical demonstrations to improve poultry health and production practices.
- Organizing and participating in project meetings, stakeholder workshops, seminars and farmer learning platforms.
- Document and disseminate lessons learned, case studies and success stories on innovative approaches to delivering poultry health.
- Collect high-quality health-related technical, social and economic surveillance assessment data using digital tools (e.g. ODK).
- Analyze and compile data using statistical software (e.g., R, STATA); Prepare technical reports and project deliverables and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
- Contribute to the review, production and preparation of technical reports, proposals and manuscripts to support resource mobilization.
- Perform other related tasks as required.
Academic and professional qualifications:
education:
- Master’s degree in veterinary medicine, poultry health management, agricultural sciences, animal sciences, or related field
expertise:
- Minimum of 5 or more years of relevant work experience in veterinary services, poultry production, animal health or agricultural research
- Experience working with women and youth groups in developing and disseminating innovative health packages for poultry
- Experience working with national actors in the field of poultry health, including governmental and non-governmental organizations
- Experience in field work, including data collection (quantitative and qualitative)
- Familiarity with the poultry health system in Ethiopia and innovative methods for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of poultry diseases.
- Prior involvement in poultry health research for development projects, including capacity building, extension and advisory services, is beneficial
skills:
- Strong technical knowledge in poultry health, farm management and biosecurity
- Skills in developing and presenting training and guidance programs directed at women and youth.
- Excellent communication, facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills
- Strong organizational and time management abilities with a proven ability to multi-task
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
- Proficient in digital data collection tools (e.g., ODK, KoboCollect)
- Proficiency in report writing, scientific writing, and technical documentation
- Practical experience in research design, field data collection, and statistical analysis (R, STATA, or similar)
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently and work in rural areas
Workstation: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Grade: Hg 14
Minimum basic salary: 54,708 Birr per month
Requirements for appointment: This is a National Officer (NS) position, initial appointment for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent on individual performance and availability of funding. ILRI’s remuneration package for nationally recruited employees in Ethiopia includes highly competitive salaries and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore retirement plan, etc. ILRI’s campus is located on a safe and attractive campus in Addis Ababa.
