Position overview
The basic function of the organizational unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension provides our residents with convenient access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty provide unbiased, research-based information to the citizens of North Carolina.
Encompassing a sprawling radius of 546 square miles and home to nearly 57,000 residents, Haywood County is the third largest county in western North Carolina, after Buncombe and Henderson counties. Haywood County is a picturesque destination located 20 miles west of Asheville, home to the charming communities of Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Lake Junaluska, Canton, and Clyde. Known for its 46 miles along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the county attracts outdoor enthusiasts with four trailheads that lead to countless hiking trails, scenic views and attractive picnic spots. Haywood County boasts a slice of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which contributes to its distinction as the most visited national park in the United States. As a designated Blue Ridge Heritage Area, the area exudes creativity in arts and crafts.
Duties and responsibilities
The livestock agent does the following:
- Provide leadership in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educational programs and activities with measurable impacts.
- Be a team player and support the overall extension program.
- Communicate with broad audiences, clients, volunteers, extension specialists and local extension staff.
- Actively seek outside resources to enhance the program.
- Develop and implement innovative strategies to deliver educational programs.
- The Extension Agent in this position will provide leadership to develop, implement and evaluate an effective livestock education program to meet the needs of the county.
- This position requires a responsible, self-motivated individual with outstanding relationship skills and a strong background in livestock production and livestock development for 4-H youth.
- The position will also include forage responsibilities.
