Mechanical Garage Shift – Metro Vancouver

Salary range/pay rate: $47.88 per hour plus 6.25% deferred compensation 2
This role receives an additional 6.25% deferred compensation for hours worked. The additional 6.25% can be taken as compensation or vacation.
Our Corporate Services Department is looking for a shift garage mechanic who will join our Fleet Maintenance team at our Lake City Operations Center in Burnaby.
You are: A self-starting individual with good mechanical aptitude, skills and abilities, who can work with minimal supervision, able to work in various work environments such as Metro Vancouver parks, water treatment plants, construction sites etc. Able to work in various work environments such as outdoors, on or near the water, with an emphasis on good communication and collaborative teamwork.
This role: (The duties described below are intended to be representative of the position and should not be considered exhaustive).
- Maintain, repair and overhaul equipment such as all types of road vehicles, including fire engines, wildland fire suppression vehicles, initial fire attack vehicles, emergency transport vehicles, diesel/gas engines, trailers, commercial trucks, road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, pumps, generator sets, small engine equipment, off-road vehicles, Marine equipment, transmissions, turbochargers, positive displacement blowers, air brakes, vehicle mounted jacks, etc.
- Service and maintain all internal combustion engines and maintain engine maintenance records.
- Under the direction of the Garage Foreperson, investigates, troubleshoots and takes remedial action on problems reported by operators.
- Be able to use the latest automotive and heavy duty diagnostic equipment.
- Must be able to assess damage caused by a vehicle collision and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintains records of jobs completed and shares experiences with operators regarding equipment serviced.
- Install and align machinery and equipment to specified tolerances.
- Training and mentoring novice mechanics in maintenance procedures.
- Maintains trade-related technical currency.
- Inventory of materials and parts required for various types of repairs.
- May be called upon to work for the Garage Foreperson as required.
- Operates in accordance with all MVRD safety policies and procedures and WorkSafeBC regulations.
To be successful you must:
- Grade 12 (or equivalent), plus appropriate trade qualification certificate (heavy mechanic, auto mechanic or commercial transportation mechanic).
- A minimum of four (4) years of experience and responsibility in heavy duty, automotive or commercial transportation maintenance involved in the repair, maintenance and refurbishment of equipment.
- Must possess a Certified Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate (CVIC) or must be able to obtain a CVIC within the first six months of assuming position. 3
- – Demonstrate working knowledge of automobile repair and diagnosis.
- Working knowledge of marine equipment installation and repair procedures is an asset.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the operation, repair and installation of large pumps, diesel and dual fuel engines.
- Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, shop tools, mills, lathes, torque wrenches, and gas cutting torches and has the ability to interpret technical reference manuals.
- Demonstrated initiative, proven ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to decide on the best working methods to be used.
- Ability to understand complex processes and theories that require analytical skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Must have computer literacy and be able to use applications such as Word and Excel, including the ability to understand and apply computerized managed maintenance systems and predictive maintenance techniques.
- Considerable knowledge of MVRD’s safety policies and procedures and WorkSafeBC regulations.
- Must participate in and develop safe work procedures.
- You should have a reliable set of hand tools.
- – Physically able to perform job duties.
- Ability to work shifts as required.
- A valid British Columbia driver’s license.
- Must possess a Category 3 (Air) endorsement or be able to obtain a Category 3 (Air) endorsement within the first six months of assuming office.3
1 The employee will initially be scheduled to work the day shift: 7:00am – 3:30pm for up to six (6) weeks for orientation and training purposes. This period can be extended if necessary.
1 A minimum of three (3) employees are required to operate the afternoon shift. In the event that the employer is unable to successfully employ the minimum staff, the employee will be required to work the day shift: 7:00am – 3:30pm until the minimum staffing is met.
2 The employee will receive a shift differential of three and a half percent (3.5%) for all actual hours worked between 3:00 PM and 12:00 AM and any overtime directly related to the afternoon shift.
3 An extension to the six (6) month requirement will be granted when an employee is unable to attend certification/licensure training/testing due to exceptional circumstances.
