Job Announcement: Archivist Intern – State of Maryland

Duties of the position
This position learns how to supervise the transfer of records into the custody of the State Archives, especially for digital records. This position learns to provide education and guidance on records management issues, including evaluating government records to identify, transfer, and describe records of lasting value. This position learns how to improve the organization, description, and accessibility of records in archival custody, especially for digital records. This position also has duties related to the proper protection of digital records in accordance with applicable laws. This position monitors the general condition of the archival holdings, environmental conditions, and the physical condition and conditions of the plant; Maintains area appropriately, takes appropriate corrective action and/or reports problems to higher level archivists for corrective action. This function is vital to the Archives’ mission of obtaining, describing, preserving and making available Maryland’s permanent records. Job Duties:
Learns how to provide the public and government officials with guidance on records management issues and assistance in accessing records
Learns how to evaluate records for their lasting value; Review record documents and recommend revisions to ensure records are described and maintained appropriately.
Learns how to investigate the nature of records and document them in order to increase archivists’ understanding of records. Helps improve archival record holdings by reviewing and improving how records are stored, described, and accessed.
Assists in managing the archive’s digital holdings. This may include assessing, collecting, processing, protecting and uploading records. This may also include using or assisting others in using digital recording software.
Minimum qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or obtaining a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Four years of experience in professional archival work with public records.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute academic credit from an accredited college or university for thirty credit hours for each year of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute two years of experience in the Archive Assistant series classification for the required education and experience.
3. Candidates may substitute military service experience in the United States Armed Forces as a commissioned officer in archival classifications or archival specialty codes in the field of library and archives work on an annual basis for the required experience.
Required or preferred qualifications
1. Previous experience working in digital records management or in the field of archiving
2. Previous experience in evaluating government records
Special requirements
Employees may be required to lift up to 50 pounds when arriving standard shipments and climbing ladders. Workers in this classification must exercise caution when retrieving and replacing heavy volumes from library shelves, especially when using library stairs. Employees may work a rotating shift and may be required to work on Saturdays.
