General Counsel
role:
The General Counsel is the legal director of the company and is responsible for all day-to-day activities that have (or may have) legal effect. The General Counsel (“GC”) position reports directly to the CEO but provides advice to all members of the executive team. The general manager advises executives, senior management, and board members on important legal issues that may have an impact on the company. The GC works closely with multiple HR professionals and defends the company from time-sensitive challenges involving harassment, discrimination, ADA violations, wage/hour disputes, and a host of other employee issues. The GC is the point of contact for important events facing the company and the safety and security of its employees. The GC manages litigation and supervises outside counsel with a focus on cost containment. The GC supports the Sales, Environment and Purchasing departments on all contractual matters. The GC is sometimes the “voice” of the company in reporting matters of importance to the company’s parent company and coordinating compliance with its input. Finally, a GC must be able to adapt to a wide range of legal concerns and focus on outcomes that support the company’s goals, values, and principles.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Providing advice and advice to the executive team
Assisting senior management in all disciplines
HR support and advice on “best practices”
Coordinating Board of Directors meetings
Dealing with corporate compliance and governance
Defending administrative claims (EEOC, ERD, ADA, etc.)
Lead the investigation team into employee complaints, whistleblowers, etc.
Respond to actual or threatened litigation and manage outside counsel (if involved)
Assist in responding to regulatory inquiries
Act as a liaison between management and employees by handling questions and interpreting and administering policies and guidelines
Anticipate and research unique legal risks that could impact the company
Provide assistance, including contract drafting, to Sales, Environmental and Purchasing departments
Create, manage and maintain company records, including intellectual property
Monitor changes in state law for multi-state business operations (currently, 6 states)
Conduct legal research, create memos, and create correspondence
Create reports for internal and external auditors regarding outstanding legal matters
Lead special tasks and projects as requested by the executive team

Education/Experience Requirements:
Juris Doctor (“JD”) degree from an accredited law school; Express in your application that you found the job on GoInhouse.com
7+ years of experience as a lawyer and/or sole practitioner
Practical knowledge of civil cases
Experience with EEOC, ERD, ADA, FMLA, and/or related administrative claims
Experience in compliance and corporate governance
Qualifications/Skills:
Strong and persuasive writing skills
High ethical standards
Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with others at all levels of development in the organization
Strong negotiation skills with both legal and financial/business issues
Ability to create and maintain strong relationships across the entire business
Ability to work independently with little supervision
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance/Accounting, Human Resources, or related field preferred
Ability to work in a team environment
Strong multitasking capabilities; Able to adapt to changing priorities, and work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines
Good understanding of business sensitivities and confidentiality
Polite and respectful behavior
