Founded in 1998 by four doctoral candidates, our group combines spatial analyzes and environmental, social, and economic sciences to understand and quantify the impacts of management and policy choices on the short- and long-term stability of ecosystems.

We specialize in capturing geospatial data using remote sensing technology, and provide services in ecological mapping, ecosystem estimation, forest management, forest carbon offset, and fire risk management.

Job Description: SIG is looking for a Full Stack Web Developer for a variety of software related to the natural hazards, environmental mapping, and forest carbon fields.

The successful candidate will have the expertise and experience necessary to build decision support tools for our clients throughout the Americas, Africa, and Southeast Asia. SIG is a digitally native organization with employees distributed across three continents. Therefore, the position is intended for remote work only, preferably in US time zones.

Responsibilities

The following list provides a description of the responsibilities of this position:

  • Work closely with a small team of 7 developers to create, deploy and maintain high-impact science sharing web applications, e.g https://pyregence.org and https://collect.earthOr environmental simulation models, spatial data distribution platforms, or offline user interfaces for scientific analyses.

  • Work closely with product/project managers to deliver products on time, on budget and within scope.

  • Complete developments using Clojure/Clojurescript, Java/Javascript, and other languages/technologies as required below.

  • Write and submit code through Git PRs, review code for other developers, perform unit and function tests, and deploy applications to public and private cloud targets.

  • Document all out-of-scope information related to project development processes for reference by other team members.

  • Participate in team and project meetings, especially regarding technical development.

  • The ability to interact with customer groups around the world through virtual meeting platforms.

Job specifications

The following list provides a summary of job requirements:

  • – At least three (3) years of experience in web application development

  • Experience in Clojure/Clojurescript or experience in Java/Javascript and/or a different Lisp dialect (e.g. Scheme, Common Lisp)

  • Experience in web mapping using OpenLayers or Mapbox

  • Familiar with functional RUI development using ReactJS and/or Reagent

  • – Familiar with functional programming techniques (e.g. pure functions, immutable data, closures, lazy, function composition, saving)

  • Experience with SQL DB programming in Postgresql (bonus points for PostGIS experience)

  • Good at working in a distributed team environment with frequent text, audio, and video communications with other developers

  • Proficient in version control procedures with Git and Github/Gitlab, including build/close issues, creating/reviewing/merging pull requests, and good branch management

  • Comfortable work in a Linux environment from the command line and management of remote servers via SSH

Additional preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Experience in geospatial processing using PostGIS, GeoTools and/or GDAL/OGR

Conditions of Employment: The position is appointed on a full-time basis. In addition, part-time consulting work may also be considered depending on the candidate’s experience and availability.
