The Director of Finance and Operations (“DFO”) is a senior leadership position that reports directly to the Head of School. Creativity, initiative, and energy are basic descriptions of a potential individual who has experience and understanding of small schools. The DFO must have a strong working partnership with the headteacher to ensure that the school’s educational objectives are supported by its business and financial objectives. To this end, the DFO is responsible for managing the following areas within the Business Office: Accounting, Tuition Management (FACTS), Human Resources/Payroll, IT Management, and Facilities Management.
This position is primarily responsible for the professional management of accounting, financial, and operational duties to help ensure the financial health of the school. To achieve this goal, DFO is responsible for monitoring, enhancing and implementing financial reporting systems and internal controls that provide accurate and timely formal reporting data and related financial reports to both the leadership team and the Board of Trustees.
DFO works with the Directors of Academic Affairs, Admissions, and Development to provide support in the areas of admissions, re-enrollment, and fundraising. Finally, the DFO must have strong working relationships with board members, the school president, administrators, faculty, church staff, maintenance staff, the PTA and the parent community at large.
Qualifications:
- The position requires a minimum of seven to ten years of accounting and management experience. Experience in a non-profit environment preferred. Experience in an independent school setting is a plus.
- The ideal candidate should have high skills in the following areas: leadership, communication, interpersonal relationship building, problem solving, multitasking, conflict resolution, and independent decision making, while demonstrating sound professional judgment and conduct.
- Working knowledge of federal and state employment laws including HIPAA, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, and EEO is a plus.
- A working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Office Suite products is essential. A working knowledge of study fact management is also needed.
Specific responsibilities:
- Ensure monthly and annual financial reporting packages are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Manage and implement all aspects of accounts receivable and payable operations.
- Manage and implement all aspects of human resources including payroll, health benefits plans, retirement plans, and onboarding/terminating new employees.
- Implementing monthly payrolls for all employees.
- Supervising the preparation and completion of the annual audit.
- Leading the school’s annual budget preparation process.
- Negotiate and manage vendor contracts in partnership with the school principal
- Oversee facilities, campus maintenance and planning including supervision of the Facilities Director.
- Oversee technology management and maintenance including device management, technology planning and IT services.
- Serve on the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees, the Joint Finance Committee (with the Church), the Joint Building and Grounds Committee (with the Church) and the Financial Aid Committee.
- 7 – 10 years of professional experience
- Minimum Education: Bachelor’s, Master’s/MBA a plus
- Experience working with QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Office Suite, and FACTS Tuition Management is essential
