Are you a passionate team player looking for a career working with animals? Do you have experience working with difficult dogs and providing care, handling and/or therapy? FVRD is looking for a full-time Animal Care Attendant to join our team in the exciting field of Animal Control. This role allows you to focus your time on benefiting the lives of animals – providing excellent care for confined dogs, as well as some poultry and livestock. The role offers a mix of manual duties such as cleaning kennels, feeding and exercising the animals. Under the guidance of the Animal Care Supervisor and Organizational Supervisor, you will work with animals through training and behavior modification plans, conduct adoption screening and boarding appointments to find homes for adoptable dogs, and provide routine medical treatment and medications as directed by your veterinarian. There are some basic clerical duties required for this role such as filling out forms and keeping accurate records, as well as communicating with potential adopters and volunteers via email, phone and in person. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work 40 hours per week including weekends and holidays. If you have transferable skills from other animal-related roles, this job could be for you!

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with courses in animal behavior, animal care, or related field plus at least 6 months in a similar role or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Good computer skills, preferably with experience in Microsoft Office;
  • Experience in animal behaviour, animal care and disease management.
  • Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all types of weather and be able to lift and carry bulky items.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and work well as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills including conflict resolution skills, the ability to express ideas and opinions clearly and communicate effectively with members of the public and co-workers;
  • He or she should truly enjoy interacting and participating in activities with the animals, and provide them with opportunities to be successful in a new home;
  • Demonstrate maturity, sound judgment, and ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with discretion and integrity;
  • You must be prepared to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays; and
  • A valid driving license.

The starting rate for this full-time union position is $20.98 per hour plus a comprehensive benefits package. Upon successful completion of the required 960-hour probationary period, the rate will increase to $24.68 per hour.
