Our Project Delivery Department is looking for a Senior Project Engineer who will be an integral part of the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (IIWWTP) Upgrade Design and Build team. The Senior Project Engineer will work on a variety of scope, budget and technical expertise which will involve working collaboratively with other team members and may manage design and rehabilitation projects. The IIWWTP will be the largest capital program undertaken by Metro Vancouver and includes new and upgraded processing facilities as well as complex civil site works and environmental restoration.
You are: A project manager with good technical knowledge of wastewater treatment facilities involving multiple disciplines including (but not limited to) civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, construction mechanical, and/or operations engineering.
You are a self-starter who is able to initiate a project already in progress, develop and maintain positive relationships, identify and resolve problems, use project management tools effectively, and support the project team to successfully complete the project. You are responsible and accountable for the work you do, and thrive in an environment of continuous learning. You can understand “big picture” engineering problems without losing sight of the details. You are skilled at developing and executing project work plans by applying cost-effective engineering solutions and outside-the-box methodologies when needed. You accept the challenge of coaching, mentoring and mentoring others. You have experience with design and/or construction projects, and an understanding of applicable regulatory and safety requirements. Strong interpersonal communication skills and adaptability are essential along with a proven ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams and a diverse range of stakeholders.
The Senior Project Engineer reports to the Senior Principal Engineer.
This role:
- Performs complex and diverse engineering and project management work that may include project design and management of large projects. Applying the principles and practices of the profession to ensure that results are achieved in a sound and practical manner.
- – Analyze and evaluate requirements and recommend optimal ways to achieve objectives.
- Responsible for overall project budgets and monitors and controls costs to ensure effective and efficient expenditure of allocated funds. Participates in short and long-term planning.
- Makes decisions and makes recommendations on a variety of issues with broad policies and mandates as guidelines. Uses ingenuity to create original, practical and economical solutions.
- Prepares and reviews project designs, technical reports, and contract specifications for consulting, equipment, and construction services. Can prepare detailed plans, calculations and specifications relating to a wide range of engineering projects. Serves as the appointed representative of Metro Vancouver on assigned matters relating to project and contract obligations including project initiatives, site inspections and determination of regulatory requirements. You may be asked to negotiate a significant artistic or financial interest on behalf of Metro Vancouver.
- Directs the actions of consultants by recommending scope changes and negotiating new terms as required. Handles the full range of project dimensions which may include legal, property, public liaison and liaison with various levels of government and other regulatory bodies.
- Explains difficult concepts, persuades others to adopt a point of view, and supports his or her position with evidence, research, or experience gained in similar situations. Typically acts as a project leader and actively works to encourage teamwork, cooperation, and efficiency.
- May supervise professional engineers and/or technical staff working on complex technical work. Peers review the work of colleagues and provide guidance to consulting engineers and technical staff. Serves as a resource for employees to obtain advice and guidance on potential approaches and problem situations. May be a resource for presentations and questions to Metro Vancouver Board of Directors, municipal committees and councils.
- May act as a technical/specialist resource, collaborating with senior engineers, management and/or government officials in the development of regulatory or government policy initiatives impacting Metro Vancouver.
- Participates in designing, preparing and approving engineering standards in the field of specialization.
- Performs other related duties as required.
To be successful you must:
- Bachelor’s degree in applied science in a related engineering discipline. Minimum of 4-6 years of recent relevant experience after professional registration; Or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Membership or eligibility for immediate membership as a Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Engineers and Geologists of British Columbia (EGBC).
- Sound technical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles and their application. Ability to serve as a resource to employees and provide sound, practical guidance for unusual or problematic situations.
- Ability to interpret and apply engineering and technical guidelines and principles related to areas of specialization such as technical manuals, laws and regulations, contracting policies, safety regulations, and corporate and board policies. Ability to adapt or modify guidelines and procedures for unique or difficult situations.
- Proven contract management and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize a complex series of project components for large complex projects to meet multiple time-based deliverables that require a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to solve problems within established guidelines and procedures; Ability to use judgment to determine applicable methods in any given situation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing including letter, report and presentation writing skills. Ability to explain difficult concepts.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain respectful working relationships with internal and external contacts under highly complex and time-sensitive circumstances. Skilled in dealing with candor, tact and sensitivity in a variety of situations including dealing with the public, member municipalities, government agencies and contractors. Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented work environment and effectively handle disagreements and prevent conflict escalation. Collaborates and communicates effectively, actively listens, and promotes teamwork.
- The ability to work in a broad direction and use independent judgment is important to solve problems when more than one option is possible. Ability to identify opportunities to meet emerging needs. Proven ability to take initiative, work with minimal supervision, and manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively. Ability to meet timelines and goals that require perseverance to overcome obstacles.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the organizational culture, processes, and mechanisms necessary to achieve business objectives; Supports Metro Vancouver’s reputation through positive and forthright dealings with other organizations and members of the public.
- Ability to supervise, coach, and mentor others while enhancing individual and team effectiveness. Ability to mentor and enhance the development of junior engineers, technical staff and direct reports as required.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project.
- Valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence.
