Freshman Programs at NC State University develops programs for incoming first-year undergraduates and transfer students, as well as continuing sophomores, that help prepare them as they transition to and through college life, as well as the challenges and opportunities that await them – intellectually, emotionally, academically and socially. Freshman programs extend into the academic year and beyond, and are intended to provide students with support and programming that will push them beyond their expectations toward a successful college experience.

Essential job duties

The Associate Director of New Student Programs at NC State University provides leadership in the use of innovative best practices in the planning and implementation of new undergraduate orientation and transition events at NC State, including primary responsibility for new student and family orientation programs and the recruitment of graduate student interns. Collaboration with campus partners is an integral part of these efforts, such as the Department of Academic and Student Affairs (Dasa), Academic Units, Office of Equal Opportunities (Office of the Executive Director), registration management and services (emas) to assist students in their transition to and across NC State. Additionally, the Assistant Director will support departmental initiatives that support the success of NC State’s incoming undergraduate students.

The Assistant Director of New Student Programs assumes the following duties:

  • Plan and manage the logistics of comprehensive new student and family orientation programs including fall and spring orientation sessions for first-year students, transfer students and their families
  • Develop outcomes and content of presentations and orientation activities with campus presenters, which may include presenting on behalf of the office or university
  • Coordinate program logistics with department staff and campus partners, including campus organizations, the Office of International Services, and the Department of Academic and Student Affairs
  • Collaborate with campus partners to mentor special populations, including international students, summer school students, and participants in transfer pathways
  • Recruitment, selection and training of the student coordinator team (student orientation faculty)
  • Supervising graduate studies and participating in supervision of undergraduate student staff for mentoring programs
  • Assist in the selection and training of undergraduate student staff in new student programs
  • Collaborate with the Administrative Support Specialist on mentoring recording and progress tracking systems
  • Coordinate evaluation of new student and family orientation programs and activities, such as student staff evaluations
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director on communication efforts regarding mentoring programs, including printed materials, websites, mobile directories, and email communications

As a member of the Freshman Programs team, each employee is expected to:

  • Support departmental and university programs to assist students with transition and success, such as accepted and confirmed student events, Welcome Weeks programs, and Shared Experience, among others.
  • Assist with general office customer service, including phone, email, and text support
  • Engage in the practice of continuous evaluation of programs and initiatives in collaboration with New Student Programs staff
  • Serve as a liaison with campus committees and a representative office at regional or national conferences
  • Work some required evenings and weekends and longer hours during peak programming
