Your role and responsibilities
The Landscape Team provides an essential service within SCC, and in support of wider environmental activities across the county. Working alongside a wide range of colleagues, we ensure that Suffolk’s landscape is protected and enhanced in line with local and national legislation, as well as climate change, nature restoration and community focused objectives.
This role represents a great opportunity to work with a range of organizations to ensure that the special qualities of Suffolk’s landscape are preserved and enhanced for future generations.
you will:
- Collaborate with colleagues in ecology, development control and highways (but not limited to), to ensure that new developments and infrastructure plans have appropriate consideration to preserve and enhance the landscape that makes Suffolk so special
- On a daily basis, you read and respond to reports and planning applications, visit proposed development sites, and liaise with colleagues within SCC and other local authorities across Suffolk.
- Collaborating with colleagues, support the advocacy of Suffolk’s landscapes as important building blocks for Suffolk’s growth, health and wellbeing
- Respond to consultations by the Council’s planning team, to ensure that potential damage to landscape features is avoided or minimized, and that proposals are accompanied by appropriate landscape plans as well as aftercare and maintenance programmes.
- Play a key role in supporting the implementation of landscape conservation projects in collaboration with SCC colleagues and external partner organizations.
You will need:
- Degree or equivalent in landscape architecture or a related environmental discipline and either hold membership of a professional body or be willing to work towards it
- Up-to-date knowledge of landscape assessment and visual impact, including landscape character assessment, to interpret assessments and plans submitted
- Willingness to learn as the work will become increasingly varied and complex and will include, for example, working on planning policy or infrastructure projects of national importance.
