Main purpose and function
This is manual labor and animal care done at the city animal shelter. The incumbent feeds and cares for all animals in confinement as well as coordinates with the supervisor to ensure best practices are met.
Specific duties and responsibilities
- Closely monitors animal behavior and health, noticing and reporting injuries and signs of illness.
- Provides ongoing checks on the reception and welfare of animals at the shelter within the scope of training, experience, and departmental policy.
- Administers prescribed medications or other treatments according to your veterinarian’s instructions.
- Performs first aid as required.
- Maintains kennel contact records current and up to date and enters information into the animal registry database as needed.
- Provides support and education to current volunteers, explains animal handling and basic behavior modifications, and encourages enrichment of shelter animals through basic training and play. Provides feedback to supervisor as required.
- Adoption consultations with members of the public to ensure good matches with potential adoptions, and provide specific information about the dog’s behavior and needs.
- Feed, water and care for a variety of captive animals
- Cleans and disinfects kennels and other work areas. Keeps your storage trailer clean and organized.
- The work is carried out under the supervision of the supervisor and is reviewed to ensure the effectiveness of the services provided.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and experience:
- Completion of Grade 12, plus sound experience working with animals including difficult animals, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Certification from a recognized veterinary assistant program is an asset.
- A current and valid British Columbia driver’s license is a requirement for this position. The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to carry out the job responsibilities legally and safely.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Sound knowledge of animal care and welfare methods, practices and procedures.
- Sound knowledge of work procedures, rules and regulations.
- Sound knowledge of common medications and their applications in veterinary practice
- Sound knowledge in the medical treatment of injured or sick animals as well as preventive medical care and post-operative care.
- – Sound knowledge and ability in behavior and training methods for dogs, including aggressive animals.
- Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
- Ability to work with all employees and interact as part of a team environment.
- Ability to perform routine tasks with minimal supervision.
- Ability to effectively use portable radios, computers, and computer software
- Ability to make difficult decisions based on best practices for animal welfare at the shelter.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy, bulky items up to 40 pounds, such as hoses, feed bags, supplies, and large animals.

- A current and valid British Columbia driver’s license is a requirement for this position. The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to carry out the job responsibilities legally and safely.
