The Maryland Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) is located in Hunt Valley, Maryland. We are a government agency charged with conducting fair and timely hearings in 500 different types of cases for more than 30 government agencies. This listening function is intended to provide an unbiased opportunity for citizens affected by the administrative actions of Maryland state agencies, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, Children’s Services, Department of Health, Personnel, and Labor and Licensing.

The OAH is currently hiring for a Mail Clerk position within our Clerk’s Office Department. Starting salary is $38,683 per year with a raise after successful completion of the probationary period. (State salary guidelines apply to current state employees.)

Main purpose of the job

The primary purpose of this position is to receive, open, sort, distribute all incoming mail, affix postage, and prepare outgoing mail, as well as print, segregate, and distribute MVA case files, subpoenas, and notices of hearing to the appropriate case clerk. This position also monitors incoming e-fax files, forwarding them to the appropriate docket specialists for processing.

Duties of the position

Minimum qualifications

Education: Completion of eighth grade.

Experience: One year of experience performing clerical duties in an office environment.

Notes:

1. Additional experience performing clerical duties on an annual basis may be substituted for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited high school or obtaining a high school equivalency certificate may be substituted for six months of the required experience.

3. The six-month clerical training may be replaced with three courses in topics such as keyboarding, clerical mathematics, word processing, spreadsheets, database, graphics presentation, proofreading, or business etiquette for six months of the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute military service experience in the United States Armed Forces as a noncommissioned officer in department ratings or administrative, clerical, or office service specialty codes in the clerical support line of work on an annual basis for the required experience.

Required or preferred qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information in your application regarding your qualifications.

1.
Prepare incoming and outgoing mail for distribution. Experience timestamping, opening, reading, decrypting, sorting and routing incoming mail; Folding, stuffing, sealing, managing and affixing postage stamps to outgoing mail or packages.

2. Clerical duties related to legal or regulatory matters, such as in a law firm or legal office, a court office environment, or a governmental unit that enforces a set of rules and regulations.

Licenses, registrations and certificates

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle.

Note that a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle are required as we no longer have government vehicles for use.
